Sekiyu Ryuushutsu (a Touhou LW original) refers to oil spills, incidents where petroleum hydrocarbon is released into a natural environment due to human activity. This is an apt temperament for Yuuma, who seeks to benefit from the conflicts raging in the dog-eat-dog world of the Animal Realm.

Dwellers of the Animal Realm seem to lack the three Essences because this chaotic realm is far from Heaven. Yuuma is endowed with Water Phase, since she can read the ebbs and flows of any situation and adapt accordingly, and Metal Phase, since fossil fuels are produced underground.

The cold and silent Metal Phase resists Earth Phase, because earth bears metal, but it is weak to Fire Phase, because fire refines metal.

The flexible and patient Water Phase resists Metal Phase, because metal collects water, but it is weak to Earth Phase, because earth directs water.

The combination of Metal Phase and Water Phase cancels out any resistance or weakness to Earth Phase.

To the Earth, humans are like insects, devouring all that it possesses. The taotie is an ancient mythological creature, also known as the fiend of gluttony. What must it have thought when it saw the bottomless nature of human greed? Perhaps it saw humans as its kin since they were both born from the pits of greed.

Long ago, boundless desire was deemed sinful, and all were warned not to succumb to it since it has the potential to harm others. However, in modern society, a desire for more motivates the workforce, and those who display that desire are in high demand. You could say modern society is one that centers around desire. Yuuma won't have to worry about running out of sustenance for as long as it remains that way.

Extraction: Black Water that Changes the Ways of the World

Yuuma Toutetsu's Spell Card. She extracts the power of crude oil in this attack. There were once two theories regarding the origin of oil. One that said its origin lay in organic life, while the other said it lay in inorganic gas produced by the Earth. Eventually, the organic life theory gained wide support, with the formation of kerogen being seen as a critical step in oil's production. The theory states that the remains of creatures from long ago amassed underwater, where they carbonized. Then, due to the Earth's heat and pressure, they transformed into oil. In that sense, oil is nothing more than a concentrated solution of the dead's resentment and vengeful thoughts.

Strange and Sinful Tale of Zhuolu

Yuuma Toutetsu's Last Word (a Touhou LW original). This attack symbolizes a brutally violent war that was fought long ago. In ancient China, there existed a beast god of immense power, said to devour stone and even iron. It combined forces with the youkai, becoming a true calamity that battled against rival gods. It was subsequently defeated and beheaded, and its head is said to have become a ding, an ancient Chinese cauldron, inscribed with the taotie's face.

The ability of Yuuma Toutetsu, the taotie―a divine beast capable of devouring anything. Yuuma senses current trends and flexibly adjusts her battle tactics without prioritizing one fighting technique over another. She can also devour absolutely anything, absorbing its essence. It seems doing so even affects her personality. It's only a matter of time until records emerge of someone seeing Yuuma with a different power and personality after she has absorbed something other than oil.

In the Animal Realm, which is ruled by violence, it's said that people like Yuuma, who wait for opportunities to present themselves before taking action, are rare. While avoiding risk, she seeks to take her enemies unaware, making Yuuma, too, a violent individual. Yuuma claiming an advantageous position with regard to controlling the oil shows that her way of doing things has its benefits.

Together with her ability to absorb anything and make its essence her own, Yuuma's subordinates trust her completely and revere her as the strongest being in the Animal Realm. However, Yuuma rarely uses her subordinates, and the Gouyoku Alliance is supposedly comprised of members acting of their own volition. Yuuma's ability and the alliance's policies are more than a match for the ultra-powerful Saki Kurokoma and the will-breaking Yachie Kicchou. The alliance has received outside criticism, with some saying for all its pride, it's weaker than the other organizations, and others claiming its leader, Yuuma Toutetsu, is a vile individual driven only by her own desires and that her subordinates are most unfortunate. However, it seems all such criticism was made intentionally to damage the alliance's reputation.

And with that, the leaders of the three organizations of the Animal Realm, the Keiga Family, the Kiketsu Family, and the Gouyoku Alliance, have come to light. It's thought that there's another organization, whose existence is as of yet unknown. If new information is found, perhaps the truth will reveal itself.

Character Analysis

Yuuma Toutetsu was released on June 30th 2023 in "Festival Prayer: Animal Realm Animosity." For more up-to-date analysis, be sure to visit the Official Discord Server.

The Animal Realm is a location befitting of the untamed, but there are three Matriarchs who assert their dominance there. We have a certain Kurokoma of the Keiga Family that leads a pack of wolf spirits, and a Jidiao who orders the Kiketsu Family of an organization of otter spirits. But what about Matriarch number 3? Well now we have a certain Taotie who leads the Gouyoku Alliance of eagle spirits! There is a reason why Yuuma Toutetsu, the consumer of anything and everything has the title “Undefeated Matriarch of the Gouyoku Alliance”, as her power and avarice going hand in hand is a surprisingly deadly combination for Yuuma to take advantage of in combat!

Yuuma Toutetsu is an Attack-Class Friend who devours her enemies with Water and Metal breaks, damage boosting via Yin ATK and CRIT ATK, her Gensokyo Killer and her extensive Agility debuffs.

As an Attacker

Gains 1.25 Spirit Power through Skill 3.
Boosts her own Accuracy with Skill 3.
Yin ATK buffs across her kit. Party buffs include Skill 3 (albeit by 1 stage) and via Last Word Pre-ATK. Selfish buffs include Spell Card 1 Pre-ATK as well on both Shots via bullet lines.
Yin DEF debuff potential via Skill 2.
CRIT DEF debuff potential via Skill 1 and Last Word.

Not only can Yuuma not be affected by any anomalies, but she can also absorb 0.20 Spirit Power whenever she gets inflicted by any of the 5 layers.
Inflicts Burn anomalies onto her enemies via Skill 2 and Spell Card 1 Bullet lines. These can only be broken only via Solo Spread Shot and All-Targeting Last Word.
Extensive Agility debuffing through all Spell Cards and Last Word.

Yuuma’s Last Word is a Body one, meaning that she can benefit from a few Story Cards that give a 50% Boost to it, such as Stand-In Shrine Maiden, Incident Shrine, Choose an Animal Spirit and Beach Sanshoku Geidontei. However, if you are lacking a little bit of Yin ATK, you can use some of those cards to help with that, most notably Rainbow Dragon Cave, as it also has a slight boost in Body Bullets by 15%.

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

Yuuma will first want to devour those books for her third Skill which is Tactical Retreat. More Spirit Power which is her only conventional source of it, a little more Accuracy, and a lesser cooldown duration from 7 Turns to 5 Turns. Next up is Feigned Alliance. That extra layer of Burn on enemies, an extra stage of Yin DEF being debuffed and its cooldown rate going from 6 turns to 5 turns is what puts it in the middle. Finally will be Threats and Offers, since it only provides an extra stage of CRIT DEF being debuffed.

Character Strengths

GOAT of Anomaly Immunity

As of Yuuma’s release, there are now only 2 Friends who cannot be inflicted by any anomalies. However, Yuuma takes it a step further, and naturally as a result of being able to absorb anything, she can absorb all 5 anomalies and turn any of those layers into 0.20 Spirit Power. This makes her a well-rounded pick for teams with allies whose kits include party anomaly infliction, and it gets her Spirit Power up even more.

Killer Taotie

Just like the other 2 Matriarchs that came before, Yuuma is eating well with Gensokyo Killer to take advantage of. All the damage increasing buffs and debuffs she can bring to the table definitely helps make more use of it, and while her personal CRIT ATK buffs are a bit lacking, that’s something that team support and Story Cards can easily fix up, and once they are fixed, those frequent CRITs will be satisfying. On another note, if you somehow cannot hit your enemy with the aforementioned Gensokyo Killer, she also has Animal Realm, Soul, Treasure and Underground to fall back on.

In her Element, but Anomalies on Enemies are Lukewarm

Yuuma’s vast amount of Water and Metal breaks are not to go unnoticed. Water breaks are found 4 times via Focus Shot, Spell Card 2 and Last Word as well as 3 times via Spell Card 1, and Metal ones can be dug up through Spread Shot 4 times, Spell Card 1 also being 3 times, and Spell Card 2 and Last Word both being 2 times. That said, while the Burn anomalies she can inflict via Skill 2 could possibly help Yuuma as a result of the enemy’s Yin stat reduction, she does struggle with breaking those anomalies outside of Spread Shot and Last Word, although if you’re just using her for damage, this probably won’t be a huge downside.
