Botzu's Quick Evaluation

+ Trait: Instead of dying when her HP reaches 0, Bena switches to a substitute that doesn't block, and after a short duration switches back to Bena.
+ Both the Substitute and Bena switch in with full HP. Bena only retreats if the substitute dies before switching back to Bena, so she can be difficult to fully kill.
+ Talent: reduces damage taken by the substitute, making it harder to kill her before switching back to Bena. The Arts damage can be helpful against high DEF enemies that Bena can't hurt
+ Can be a great bait/ranged damage soak because of the difficulty to fully kill her.
+ S2 has good DPS and cycle time
= swapping between them clears negative status effects but also clears buffs.
= S2 will almost always do more damage than S1, even against higher DEF enemies.
- Both Skills reduce Bena's HP, and S2 will cause her to switch before the duration ends. Healing support may be required if needing Bena to stay blocking.
- skills end when switching to the substitute, and SP cannot be gained when the substitute is deployed.

Operator Overview

Bena is a fairy tale guardian from the Castle of Dreams, who protects objects that have sentimental value to children. When fellow guardian Iris left the Castle to return a radio and never came back, Bena decided to go looking for her. Accompanied by her best friend—a life-size doll named Annie—Bena found Iris working at Rhodes Island and concluded that she would have to help Iris finish her work so they could both go back to the Castle of Dreams. No sooner said than done! Bena is now a member of Rhodes Island, starting a brand-new archetype as a 5* Substitute Specialist. Her powerful offensive Skills come with self-damaging drawbacks, but that’s okay; when Bena hits 0 HP, she switches for Annie, who continues the fight until Bena can return to the fray.

Clearly the most notable thing about Bena is the way she switches for a new unit when she hits 0 HP. Bena has Block-2 and inflicts Physical damage with her giant scissors; Annie has Block-0 and inflicts Arts damage with a magic wand. After a certain period of time, Annie automatically switches out so Bena can return to the field. Be careful: Annie can still be K.O.ed by ranged attacks, and if Annie hits 0 HP, she and Bena are retreated like a normal Operator.  On the positive side, since both Bena and Annie appear with full HP on transition, Bena can act as a permanent range-damage soak as long as Annie doesn't die. Fortunately, from E1 onward, the Bena’s Protractor Talent reduces the amount of Physical and Arts damage that Annie takes.

In contrast to Annie, who uses their Talent to protect herself, Bena puts herself in danger with wild abandon using her Skills. Fervent Trimming sacrifices a chunk of Bena’s HP in order to grant her increased ATK and limited DEF-ignoring properties, while Rapid Trimming increases Bena’s ATK and ASPD but causes her to lose HP with each attack. S2 in particular can do pretty impressive damage, and will typically perform better than S1 even against higher DEF enemies. (Note that neither Skill can be used by Annie, and the effects do not carry over between them if Bena hits 0 HP mid-Skill-use.) If the backlash from either Skill causes Bena to hit 0 HP… well, then Annie jumps out to smack enemies around with her staff for a while!

Between high Skill DPS and the safety net of her Substitute, Bena can be a great damage dealer who continues outputting damage even “after death,” as it were. However, you have to pay close attention when using her. Switching suddenly between Block-2 (Bena) and Block-0 (Annie) can result in enemies leaking through your defensive lines if you are relying on Bena to block, and since her Skills do self-damage, she'll need to be supported by a healer to act as a lane holder. Don’t be fooled by Bena’s “Fast-Redeploy” tag, either; Bena actually has a very long redeploy time, like many other welfare Operators. (The “Fast-Redeploy” seems to be referring to the Substitute mechanic rather than actual redeploy time, which is reasonable but misleading.) It’s fine for Bena to hit 0 HP,  bring out Annie, and then switch back, but if Annie hits 0, you’re going to be waiting a long time to get them back in action again.

She’s not exactly a drop-and-forget kind of Operator, but Bena IS a fascinating new addition to the Arknights cast. Most of the time she’ll be used like a frontline Guard DPS, but she can also act as a great ranged damage bait, and is one of the only Operators guaranteed to absorb at least two hits—one to K.O. Bena, another to K.O. Annie. Melee enemies in particular suffer against Bena, since they can’t kill Annie thanks to her Block-0, and even ranged enemies can have difficulty thanks to the damage reduction from Bena’s Protractor. Plus, she’s a welfare Operator and thus very accessible through her event! What’s not to love?

Newbie Tier List Explanation

Good DPS melee unit that can block 2, but needs support to act as a lane holder. Her substitue mechanic is very permissive for new players, since even if she gets deployed somwhere where she dies, she stays present and likely substitute back. However, new players probably won't be utilizing the substitute strengths directly (and it could cause problems until learned), as it is a bit more of an advanced tactic. 5 star development costs mean 4 star alternatives might be better to start with, but her late game unique utility means that development investment is unlikely to be wasted.

Skill Discussion

Bena is a very curious unit. She has a strong kit with lots of potential, yet is very hard to get full value out of and hasn't really made a showing in end game content yet despite the potential. She is a very appealing unit to the more creative players, but likely to be frustrating to players who prefer brute force. Something to remember is that when she 'dies' and brings in her substitute, she loses all SP and doesn't begin gaining SP again until her base form returns. Her cycle times can be deceptively long.

Her masteries present a tough problem of priority. Neither directly affects her bait potential, but both are solid choices in different ways and do different things. I also hesitate to grade both though for fear of giving the wrong impression. I would lean towards S2 as the better mastery though. S2 has significantly better mastery gains, and significantly better damage against low to medium defense enemies (S1 doesn't overtake S2 until around 1100 enemy DEF, and by 1500 most of the advantage is lost) leaving S1 a costly alternative only better in a narrow band. Either way, though she has lots of potential, her masteries are very much luxury options.

After Iris came to Rhodes Island, a Cautus visitor would often come to carry away what children wanted safekept. But one day, this Cautus visitor brought a Caprinae from Victoria who directly sought out Iris, chattered with her for more than an hour, and then applied to stay aboard just like Iris had. From her vexed, scheming expressions, it's plain to see that she's confident Rhodes Island is using some underhanded method to curtail Iris's freedom. After conducting an 'investigation' aboard that stretched out over two months, she found no evidence to support her view; our Cautus friend and Iris helped out in resolving this misunderstanding, and ultimately, she conceded her own failure of judgment. However, she did not return directly to Victoria, instead having the Cautus leave and then staying aboard along with Iris. The 'public' account is that she feels she should be of company to Iris until she fulfills her own responsibility, but the truth?
'There are riches of toys in the playroom here, and plenty of people to play with. What's the harm in me staying for a while?' After finishing registering herself and becoming an interim Operator Caprinae—so Bena said.

Archive File 2

Increase Trust to 100.
Like Iris, interim Operator Bena asks the children whether they have anything they can't keep safe for long, and hands it to her Cautus associate to take back to Victoria. However, the way she gains trust is unlike Iris. To put it this way: Iris looks after the other children like an older sibling, while Bena plays together with the children, becoming one of them. With the help of her doll Annie, Bena is easily able to slip into the children's conversational circles, and is further able to put on an 'act' in front of others of her own volition, 'imitating' all sorts of personalities. If the Doctor hadn't punctured her 'act' the first time they met, she would be giving the Doctor a completely different character and tone of voice now.
Owing to her consummate 'acting,' Bena is often able to 'obtain' more belongings than Iris does. That said, she's not competing with Iris for anything, only treating this as a sort of work, something she must do. Bena is always willing to do more for the Castle's long-retired 'Granny'—this is one of the few things she will readily admit.

'After Bena boarded, Iris's routine with that mysterious Cautus changed. Now she takes everything to Bena first, the two of them are alone for a bit, and then Iris comes out with the things again and hands them over. Why? What on Terra is Bena up to?' —Excerpt from the failed Iris investigation records

Archive File 3

Increase Trust to 150.
Bena doesn't shy from telling others just what her duty in the Castle is. Just as we'd conjectured, she is the one in charge of the preservation technique for belongings, and through her handling, the lifespans of things sent to the Castle can far exceed the original limit of their existence. However, should anyone attempt to look into details of her technique, she will make use of every childlike technique to avoid talking about the particulars, including but not limited to: dour refusal, blank ignorance, instant lapse of memory, etc., etc. Thanks to her reactions being far too amusing for their own good, some go out of their way to raise this topic with her, but anyone Bena or Annie sees through will soon suffer the practical tomfoolery of a little Caprinae and her doll together. At this stage, one can put the Caprinae prankmaster out of their mind, because most of the time, the one putting plans into practice is the ordinarily quiet, unspeaking doll Annie.
'I'm warning you, never, ever treat Annie as some ordinary doll. She—forgive me for using 'she' rather than 'it' to refer to Annie—she can speak, think, is capable of lone operation far from Bena, and aside from clear spherical joints and a notable gap in personality, fundamentally differs none from Bena at all. Moreover, though she's reserved with speech, her curiosity is exuberant. When not by Bena's side, she'll roam about Rhodes Island wherever on her own, and should she find something interesting, she'll stay there and quietly watch, saying nothing. People are frequently startled by Annie, and some inquisitive people will instruct Annie personally. At times, Annie will be so absorbed in observation that she'll forget to return to Bena's side, who as a master of sorts will scramble about Rhodes Island searching for her doll, then finally find her Annie nestled in some room focused on something all too keenly.'
'I know the description above might not seem too frightening. That's because I've only written about how Annie ordinarily acts. If you antagonize her and Bena, Bena will tell Annie absolutely every last horrid idea off the top of her head, and Annie will then spend days, possibly even up to months, carrying these plans out on you without a break.'
'Believe me, you don't want to try. In terms of build and potential to harm, she has Morte beat by miles.'
—Independently compiled by a Rhodes Island archivist Operator

Roam, lost lamb, without a way, so worn and parched her stomach brays.
Home so far, kindred unknown, name all gone, lost years ago.
Roam, lost lamb, without a way, not even loved by Feline may.
Come a night with stormy rain, thunder and lightning fierce—
The little lamb sits 'neath the eaves, with hollow belly's fears.
And plop! she hears from somewhere off, a person's tripped and fell—
An oldly lady, rushing home, has slipped, and is unwell.
No-one around this roaring rain takes note, or has a mind to pay—
'Oh Granny, Granny, are you fine? Is everything okay?'
The little lamb, her heart so warm, lone helper from afar—
'Thank you, thank you, little lamb, so darling kind you are.
The rain is pouring, quickly now—go home and bless your soul—'
Yet great and vast the city runs, the lamb without abode.
'Come to my house, then, come with me. Take rest beyond the rain.'
She shakes off dry, she nods, and goes to Granny's place to stay.
A basket full of ripe red fruit, she hands the lamb to bear—
The apples, slicked, perfume so sweet, her mind so wide aware.
She swallows down her hunger, by her shoulder lifts the weave—
And once at Granny's door, the rain has soaked her to a freeze.
But Granny doesn't mind, and brings her to the dining space—
'Sit now, darling little lamb, sit down and take your place.
I'm off upstairs to take a bath. I'll be right back posthaste.'
Then Granny leaves behind the lamb, to sit there all alone.
The food is rich, laid wide in front—her mind and stomach groan.
She swallows down another ache, and waits for Granny wise.
She waits, and waits, and waits until she faints from hunger's cries.
She wakes again after some time, now lying in a bed.
She's clean and dry, and by her side, all wondrous food is spread.
She's filled with such a warmth inside, and Granny's tickled pink—
'Eat, now, eat, poor little lamb, there's no more need to think.
You'll never want for food or drink, if you come by my side.'
'Oh, why? Oh, why?' the lamb now asks, and asks again, eyes wide.
'Because, my dear, once storms clears up, the apples washed by rain—
Are sweetest of them all.' And Granny laughs, and laughs away.

Upgrade to Elite LV2.
Bena has extreme hands-on proficiency. All the clothes you see her as well as Annie wearing were personally made by herself. We've heard that in the Castle is an age-old library, and Bena's childhood was, outside of completing what tasks her Granny gave her, spent in that library reading whatever books she wanted to. She had too solitary a life in the past, to the extent that when she discovered techniques in a book that could enable her to 'make' her own true friend, she threw all her time into it without hesitation, and the ultimate crystallization of these techniques is Annie herself. Not a single person in the Castle was surprised by the appearance of Annie; to them, 'everything in fairytales is possible,' yet she'd need an explanation if she were meeting anyone outside the Castle—
'A doll' is the pretense Bena gives. Bena often needs to use Originium Arts and manual ability to protect Annie, and in this regard, there is no difference between her and a doll. That said, those who pay attention will note that the Caprinae and the doll's conversations seem more than anything to be another sort of 'act.' Both have long since understood the other's actions, they know the other's tastes, and making displays of communication is really just a way of relief during daily life, or to alleviate surrounding people's doubts and fears. That perspective is one reasoned through the lens of medical observation by the doctor that carries out Bena's scans. From it, we can infer that when Bena says Annie is 'another me,' she's not lying whatsoever.
'We have queried the relevant Medical Department Operator with resulting testimony that the above speculation has no empirical evidence. Deletion suggested.' —Anonymous high-ranking administrative personnel

Appointed as Assistant Do you think me a princess, sitting elegantly in an office?
Talk 1 Don't take Iris's songs as true. They're for the young children, you know. What? Yes, I'm the guards with the scissors—what about it? Chop-chop? That's me making clothes—what did you think it was? *sigh* Adults, honestly. So eager to assume worse.
Talk 2 Preservation techniques? I wouldn't know. Even Iris hasn't the faintest clue how I keep things safe, so why would I be telling you?
Talk 3 Let me introduce Annie to you. She's my very best friend, and another 'me.'
Talk after Promotion 1 Don't ask me. I don't know why the Castle takes things in from everywhere to keep and then sends them back out. Granny wants me to do it, so I do it. In adult terms, it's work, isn't it? Something someone has to do.
Talk after Promotion 2 Annie's a quiet one by nature, nothing at all like me. C-Controlling her? What are you talking about?! She's a person, she goes where she wants to! She's only by my side because she likes being with me. That's what best friends are like. Aren't they, Annie? 'Mm.'
Talk after Trust Increase 1 There's too many children here. No wonder Iris doesn't want to leave. Hrmm... if this goes on any longer, we may as well move the whole Castle of Dreams here onto Rhodes Island. It'll save time, and effort.
Talk after Trust Increase 2 What even is a good girl? Are you saying I'm not good? —Well, I suppose Granny has said there's situations you can't do as you please in, where you need to 'act' a little. Like? Well... 'My greetings to you, I come from the County of Lyndon. My name is Bena.' More or less like that, you know!
Talk after Trust Increase 3 Granny brought me into the Castle when I was young, and I grew up there. When she retired, I took over her post at the Castle. How am I anything like Iris who just inherits the whole place? What, you think I'm jealous? Not a chance! Iris has to watch out for her figure, and me? I can eat all I want without putting on a pound, ahah!
Idle 'Rest soundly. Doctor.' Who cares about that Doctor? Come out and let's go play! 'Alright.'
Onboard I'm Bena, here to retrieve an idiot who went out and forgot to come home. But I hear there's still things she has to do, and I suppose that's fair. I'll stay and keep her company for a while.
