Botzu's Quick Evaluation

+ Usual archetype strengths: Has DEF +200% and RES +20 while her Skills are NOT active, putting her on par with multiple Defenders
+ Attacks all enemies within her attack range while her Skills are active (“true” AoE)
+ Talent heals her every time she uses a Skill
+ S1 gives her a DEF bonus while active, and Charged S1 retains her Trait buff for the duration; Charged S1 gives her pretty phenomenal defenses (plus a huge heal from her Talent), making this a great skill to support the Archetype’s role of “ranged tank”
+ S2 inflicts Slow, and Charged S2 inflicts Bind, giving Carnelian good AoE crowd control. With ASPD buffs Charged S2 becomes unrivaled in its Bind uptime.
+ S3 has expanded attack range; Charged S3 increases damage potential, great against large groups of enemies. It has a faster cycle time than most comparable skills, so it can be available more often.
+ Has pretty reasonable SP costs for her Skills
- Archetype drawback: doesn't attack when skills are not active, and defenses drop when skills are active, so careful skill use planning is necessary (though charged S1 retains these defenses).
- For Skills to compete against the best available, they must be Charged, meaning they must gain twice the normal amount of SP. This leads to a slower first-time Skill activation and overall Skill charge times that are longer than they might appear to be at first glance.
- S3 damage ramps up over time, and the charged effect damage increase requires multiple hits per enemy to stack, making it take a relatively long time to reach its peak damage (if it ever does)

Operator Overview

Carnelian is Beeswax’s big sister, and as is the custom for their people, Carnelian left home to go on a journey of self-discovery when she reached her majority. And what a journey it was: she accidentally adopted Count Hohenlohe of Leithania as her little brother, and is now working for Rhodes Island to secretly obtain treatment for the Infected Count. Carnelian is determined not to make her younger siblings--adopted and blood-related alike--worry about her. Fortunately, she's more than capable of keeping herself safe, bring a 6* Modal Caster with a potent Charge mechanic, great self-sustain, AoE crowd control, and ramping Arts damage.

As a Modal Caster, Carnelian flips between two “modes” in battle, depending on whether her Skill is active or not. When she is not using a Skill, Carnelian has massively buffed DEF and RES, but she cannot attack. When she IS using a Skill, Carnelian loses her DEF/ RES buffs, but begins unleashing AoE Arts shockwaves in an area around her.

On top of the Modal Caster mechanics, Carnelian is the first Arknights Operator to use the Charge mechanic. She keeps gathering SP after she reaches the SP cost threshold for her Skills. When she has accumulated twice the base SP cost, the Skill icon changes from yellow to red and the Skill gains a bonus effect when activated. (So, if her Skill costs 25 SP, she can activate the Skill anytime as long as she has at least 25 SP reserved. But if she activates the Skill at 50 SP instead, she gets the bonus effects.) One of the bonus effects is her E1 Talent, Meal of Life, which restores Carnelian’s HP after she activates a Skill. If she is activating a Charged Skill, then the HP restored is doubled! The other Charge effects depend on which Skill she is currently using:

  • Sandstorm Guardian (S1) is a simple Skill that gives Carnelian a large ATK and DEF boost. If Charged, Carnelian also retains her DEF/ RES buff for the Skill’s duration. This is the skill to use if you want to take advantage of her Archetypal traits and use her primarily as a ranged tank.
  • Sand Fetters (S2) is a crowd-control Skill that speeds up Carnelian’s rate of attack and causes her attacks to inflict Slow. If Charged, this Skill inflicts Bind on enemies instead. This is a excellent crowd-control skill, and it can be made even stronger with ASPD buffs (i.e., Aak).
  • Mark of Gluttony (S3) expands Carnelian’s attack range and gives her an ATK buff that ramps up over time. If Charged, each attack on an enemy increases the damage she deals to them, stacking up to 5 times.  This skill has great AoE Arts destructive power, and although it doesn’t quite match some of the most broken options in the game (i.e., Eyjafjalla), its cycle time is shorter, so it can be used more often.

Carnelian has a lot of potential, but unfortunately the windup time to realize it is a big drawback.  S3 damage ramps up over time, and the charged effect damage increase requires multiple hits per enemy to stack, making it take a relatively long time to reach its peak damage (if it ever does).  On the SP side, her costs look reasonable at first glance, but her Skills aren’t as impressive unless you Charge them first, which means a longer first-use, and twice the downtime between uses--and remember, without a Skill active, Carnelian’s only contribution is damage soaking.

In addition, Carnelian doesn’t really bring much to the table that other Operators don’t already. Her S2 and S3 are both strong skills, but there are other Operators who can cover those roles just as well or better (especially if Carnelian isn’t supported). In addition, trying to utilize S2/ S3 can be risky if using Carnelian in her archetypal role of damage sponge, since she loses her Trait’s defenses when they are active. Finally, Carnelian’s Charging adds an additional layer of planning and timing, so she is not suited to players who prefer hands-off, low-maintenance Operators.

On the plus side, Carnelian’s 6* stats make her an incredible ranged-grid tank between Skill uses (or even during them, if using Charged S1) and a Charged Meal of Life is basically a free full-heal. It’s rare to have a ranged unit with Carnelian’s level of durability, and this alone can make her a valuable Operator. If Carnelian is given room to breathe, she will assuredly stop her opponents from doing the same.

Newbie Tier List Explanation

Carnelian's S1 and S2 will not be particularly impactful in the early game for new players. Her S3 can be quite useful, though, so she is worthy of early E2 consideration. Not attacking outside of skill use may cause new players to find this Archetype to be less intuitive, impactful, and easy to use than others, though having a ranged tank option could be useful while still learning proper aggro/deployment mechanics.

Skill Discussion

S3: ASPD buffs that are greater than 0 but less than 10 will reduce S3s overall damage because of the way the ramping damage of the skill is applied to attacks

S2M3 C C C

Carnelian is a decent Story mode unit but has some significant design issues that keep her out of the upper tiers of the meta. Long wind ups, a lack of synergy with the archtype, and a charged effect that's basically mandatory all contribute to what would seem to be at first glance a very good unit. Instead she is left as a decent Story mode unit who gets picked less than her little sister in end game scenarios.

Despite the issues with her kit, it has some pretty interesting skills for consideration. A majority of players will want to stick with S3 for Mastery and go no further. Damage is by far the biggest asset that she has, so maximizing it is key, as well as reducing her hampering wind up time.

S2 is an interesting option providing a good stall with some supplemental damage. Carnelian combines with Aak well since she can natively survive his buff, and with it, S2 becomes a permanent stall for the duration. However, that's ultimately a niche usage. It requires two units at a high cost and unimpressive uptime when there's almost always a better solution available and has yet to find its way into high end gameplay.

Integrated Strategies Tier List Explanation

General IS Notes

+ Can draw ranged attacks and shrug them off easily.
+ S2: Very powerful skill for crowd control with okay damage.
+ S3: Extremely powerful AoE burst damage on a decent range and good cycling.
- Sitting duck offskill.
- S3: Large amount of conditionals gimps damage output.

IS2 Specific Notes

High Res when shield is up lets her somewhat soak neural triggers and heal back up with her Talent 1, but this strategy is risky. Cannot deal with neural drones offskill.

Good Relics

Golden Chalice
'Children's Puppet'

Relic Interactions

Both S2 and S3 benefit massively from Attack Speed increases. S2 easily reaches permanent Bind uptime on a quick cycle. S3 can fulfill the Mark conditionals much more easily for massive burst DPS. S2 can deliver great DPS combined with the Bind = Damage relics.

Recommended Promotion

E2 recommended for access to her S3 and Masteries.

Profile

Carnelian hails from an ancient tribe in the depths of Sargon, outside the control of the lords ameer. She is currently traveling abroad, and has taken long-term residence in Leithanien after coming under the employ of a Count Hohenlohe there. She has formed a partnership with Rhodes Island and, as one of its operators, carries out missions inside Leithanien's borders.

Clinical Analysis

Increase Trust to 25.
Imaging tests reveal clear, normal outlines of internal organs, and no abnormal shadows have been detected. Originium granules have not been detected in the circulatory system and there is no sign of infection. At this time, this operator is believed to be uninfected.

[Cell-Originium Assimilation] 0%
Operator Carnelian shows no signs of Originium infection.

[Blood Originium-Crystal Density] 0.12u/L
Back home, Operator Carnelian rarely came into contact with Originium. She has also shown herself to be particularly healthy and strong. As a Sargon in Leithanien, she has a good understanding of her own health. As long as she takes proper precautions and doesn't get in any accidents, it shouldn't be hard for her to stay healthy and in good shape.

Carnelian's origins are no secret.
She comes from an old tribe that resides deep in Sargon's golden sands. Per the tribe's traditions, everyone must leave home to study abroad when they come of age. This Caprinae has been to many places, and aside from browsing and studying, her favorite pastime is buying some small, special souvenirs for herself... Had there not been any accidents, Leithanien would have been Carnelian's last stop. Fortunately or not, there was an accident.
While she was taking a stroll in a certain Leithanian city, Carnelian bumped into the ruler of the territory. What's more, the Hyacinth Count, then still young, was unable to hide the fact that he was infected. As a result, she was detained, and what could have been a simple conclusion to her study trip got far more complicated.
Despite the tense first meeting, as she started to spend time with him, the frail Leithanian count and Carnelian warmed up to each other. According to Carnelian, this might be because she was already used to dealing with kids, having helped raise her little sister, so the young count was like a bothersome little brother to her. In other words, a headache that would only turn into an even bigger headache if left unattended. However, there is no doubt now that she approves of the young count, who is in a tough situation, trying his hardest to hide his infection. Not only that, but she took it upon herself to protect him and aid him however she could.
As it turns out, Carnelian first made contact with Rhodes Island because she needed to discreetly obtain treatment for the count. In exchange for the medication that Rhodes Island is providing the count, she is assisting Rhodes Island as an operator with any affairs it is unable to conduct in Leithanien.

Archive File 2

Increase Trust to 100.
The first impression that Carnelian usually leaves is that she is tall and confident, meticulous and full of vigor, capable of assigning tasks methodically, and always having a well-thought-out plan for everything around her. Nonetheless, for an attendant to a Leithanian count, she can be lacking in elegance and delicacy. On the other hand, as a Sargonian, her words and demeanor can also seem somewhat restrained. These contradicting aspects both factor into Carnelian's own unique disposition. Those who don't know her well enough would likely be confused by the Caprinae's easygoing personality and mistake her for a friendly woman.
Over time, as her partnership with Rhodes Island continued, Carnelian's own personality became apparent to all those who interact with her. She may seem charming and open, getting along with the other operators well, and always wearing a smile on her face, but it would be a mistake to forget Carnelian hails from Sargon. All those who fought alongside her described her with words like 'fierce,' 'violent,' and 'cruel.' The elegant, exquisite techniques she demonstrates in battle are all facades imposed upon her by Leithanien to hide her primal thirst to attack.
Carnelian doesn't try to hide her true self much. No matter the circumstance, she does things according to her principles. Be it the kindness she shows her friends or her cruelty toward those she sees as her enemies, she will never hold back. Leithanien can never truly keep such a Sargonian in check.
That said, Carnelian, the self-proclaimed 'qualified big sister,' does try to calm down a little when her actual little sister and the little brother that she 'picked off the streets' are around to maintain a gentle image—Whether she succeeds at doing so is up for debate, though.

Archive File 3

Increase Trust to 150.
As one of the conditions of our quid pro quo, Carnelian is registered as an external operator at Rhodes Island. However, whenever anyone tries to look up Carnelian's operational records with insufficient permissions, all they will receive is a falsified message that claims she is 'currently on a secret mission.' This is the very first request that Carnelian made when she was listed as a Rhodes Island operator.
Carnelian explained that she has a little sister with whom she is fairly close. Thanks to the disruption in her study plans, it has been two years since she took up residence in Leithanien. Soon, her sister will come of age, and it will be her turn to follow the tribe's tradition and leave on a journey. Because of the restrictions that come with her job in Leithanien and the fact that she doesn't want to get her sister mixed up in this affair, she has avoided reaching out to her sister. As a result of her overprotectiveness, while she has no qualms about putting herself in danger, she fears putting those whom she holds dear in even the slimmest chance of danger.
Now that she is also a Rhodes Island operator, Carnelian has made it clear she wishes to use this status to make contact with her sister. If her sister comes to Rhodes Island, she will find out that Carnelian is carrying out a secret operation, and once Carnelian catches wind of this, she will find the right time to 'finish her mission and come back to Rhodes Island,' so to speak, to reunite with her family.

The pride and egotism that Leithanian nobles show for their bloodline is likely unimaginable to anyone from outside the country. Indeed, it may be hard for an outsider like Carnelian to truly understand this place. While, to most Leithanians, outsiders may indeed be able to temporarily seize glory and step into the spotlight, but those without roots here will find this fabricated fame disappear in no time. Carnelian scoffed at this idea. According to her, even the most pureblooded of nobles frequently find themselves having to tread each of their steps carefully.
She recounted the following story to us:
After the House of Hohenlohe was defeated in a conspiracy perpetrated by their political enemies, there was only a young boy left to succeed to the family's title. Unfortunately, the boy was also infected during the upheaval.
Given the situation, it would be extraordinarily dangerous to contact outside medical organizations or pharmaceutical companies. In the end, it was Carnelian, the girl who chose to stay behind to mind other people's business, who persuaded the count to get treatment. Carnelian is undoubtedly a careful and perceptive woman who is nonetheless honest to her feelings, and she has never tried to change this.
The House of Hohenlohe's political enemies or their pride are the least of her worries, as the only thing that's on her mind is the child's condition.
Fortunately, after their careful deliberation, the Hohenlohes decided against contacting massive conglomerates or organizations, instead, they picked out Rhodes Island from their long lists of companies to reach out to.

[Classified Log]
The assistance we are providing to one side of the struggle in Leithanien has caused a rift between our members. As such, I would like to elaborate on my own personal view of the issue.
It has been some time since the Twin Empresses took over from Leithanien's Witch King. The country has recovered from that terror, and the nobles have regained control. We have already seen far too many ugly power struggles occur under the Empresses' eyes. It's not unreasonable that some of you are worried about our hasty decision to take sides, that it may destabilize our standing and lead us down a path detrimental to our original purpose. This speculation is reasonable, and it is of course important to be cautious and to take all necessary considerations carefully.
Regardless, I must maintain my standpoint:
Providing treatment to Oripathy patients has been and will remain Rhodes Island's foremost objective, and we will never abandon the patients who seek our help regardless of their status or standing.

As both sides' trust for each other continues to deepen, during her time with Rhodes Island, Carnelian has revealed to us crucial nuggets of information more than once.
Evidently, the Sargonian has her own ideas about what's going on around her. This not-so-discreet intimation may be a kind of test or a kind of advance notice. It could even be a sign that she needs our help. If we trust that everything she says is true and sincere, then those thoughts evidently have long lingered in her mind. Perhaps she has already pondered these ideas over and over for a long time, and given the right opportunity, she will likely put her plans into action.
Perhaps it won't be long before she openly requests further help from us.
When that time comes, what should Rhodes Island do? It would be a difficult question to answer.

Aside from this, there is one thing that we should pay extra attention to:
While it is a good thing to be trusted and loved, we mustn't let our guard down. Carnelian seems intent on bringing home everything that catches her eye.

Appointed as Assistant You pulled an all-nighter, and you're still not done? Sheesh, what should I do with you...? How much do you have left? I'll help. You should get some rest. Work on your time management next time.
Talk 1 I can confirm we've received this shipment of medicine without issues. The quantities are right. As for the payment, could you please let Kal'tsit know I'll take care of that pain-in-the-neck mission for her.
Talk 2 Count Hohenlohe, some call him the Hyacinth Count. The way I see it, he's quite a handful with that personality of his. I'm serving as attendant to this Leithanian noble family because of some trouble. What trouble, you ask? Hm... Let's keep this a secret for the time being.
Talk 3 That little squirt... Her codename here is uh... Beeswax? Looks like she tripped in the hallway this morning. Can she really cut it? She sure knows how to keep her sister worrying.
Talk after Promotion 1 Rhodes Island provides what the count and I need. In return, I take care of Rhodes Island's troubles in Leithanien. This is what you call a win-win situation, isn't it? Come, shake my hand. This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship, Doctor.
Talk after Promotion 2 The Leithanians' research on Arts has far exceeded my expectations, and their architecture, music, and education... All are worthy of study. One day, I will bring all this back home. Yeah, and I might bring something else along, though.
Talk after Trust Increase 1 The longer we acclimate to an environment and the different people there, the harder it will get for us to free ourselves, and eventually we'll be made to fit its mold... Don't you agree, Doctor? Well, that's not going to get me tied down here. Not unless I allow it.
Talk after Trust Increase 2 I'm sure the nobles think of me as an odd thorn in their side. No matter. I don't mind. Though I'd rather keep all this trouble a secret from Beeswax. It's too dangerous... Well, now that I mention it, I can't quite stop worrying about you, either.
Talk after Trust Increase 3 If it's at all possible, I'd rather stay out of the nobles' bickering. Do you know how much I have to worry about each and every day with all the chaperone work and missions I have? Maybe I should talk the count into letting me hop over here full time. I'm counting on you to help me when the time comes, Doctor.
Idle My little sister sometimes talks in her sleep. This one time, I even caught her talking bad about me. Heheh, Doctor, do you know what you said in your sleep the other day?
Onboard Hello, you must be the Doctor? I'm Carnelian, attendant to Count Hohenlohe... Oh, I'm just a normal operator here at Rhodes Island. Watch what you say around my sister, okay?
Watching Battle Record I see. This is worth studying.
Promotion 1 There is no need, but I appreciate your sentiment. Thank you.
Promotion 2 You see, there's a huge number of people and things that I can't stop worrying about, and that number is growing by the day. It's been a while since I was able to do as I please, but since you're up for it... Well, let's put on a show.
Added to Squad This is not part of our agreement, but fine. I'm happy to help.
Appointed as Squad Leader Don't worry. I'll bring everyone back.
Depart Follow the plan, everyone!
Begin Operation Elegance and etiquette are the way of nobility. Not mine.
Selecting Operator 1 As you wish.
Selecting Operator 2 Between a refined combat style or something more direct, which do you prefer?
Deployment 1 It's been a long time since my blood boiled like this.
Deployment 2 Greetings... Let's forgo the bothersome formalities and get this thing started.
In Battle 1 Gnaw them to shreds and drink their blood!
In Battle 2 Run them down and beat them to a mash!
In Battle 3 Careful! Don't let me tear you to shreds so quickly!
In Battle 4 My oh my, what a pitiful sight. Why are you covered in blood all over?
4-star Result Nothing to worry about then. That was easy enough for you.
3-star Result Okay, that concludes the mission, and right on time, too... Are you hurt, Doctor?
Sub 3-star Result Calm down. Just leave the rest to me. They won't get away.
Operation Failure Fall back, now! Don't panic. As long as I'm still standing, no one will touch you!
Assigned to Facility Just as I thought. I can relax better in a room without much decoration.
Tap Oh... Watch out. My horns could get you.
Trust Tap What's wrong? Are you tired? Get some rest. You've worked hard enough already.
Title Arknights.
Greeting More work today? Don't spend the whole day sitting, Doctor.
