Botzu's Quick Evaluation

+ Powerful Pioneer Vanguard with a great mix of survivability and damage.
+ Passive dodge chance boosts her survivability against all kinds of opponents.
+ Talent: Transforms dodges into more powerful strikes.
+ S2: Provides high physical dodge to all Operators within range.
+ S3: One of the highest dodge rates in the game from a single Operator. Has very quick cycling and strong burst damage.
- Heavy diminishing returns on stacking dodge chances.
- Reliance on dodge makes her kit very RNG-centric. Gets overwhelmed really easily if she doesn't dodge.
- S2: Somewhat worse DP generation than other Vanguards in her archetype.
- S3: Extremely quick cycling and short duration leaves her wide open against enemies that won't die from a single usage.

Operator Overview

Flametail’s embarrassed smile hides a heart full of pain. As an Infected Knight of Kazimierz, Flametail was jeeringly placed in an exhibition tournament where she had to fight and kill other Infected, and the experience understandably traumatized her. Determined to protect others like her, Flametail started the Pinus Sylvestris suborganization within Rhodes Island and returned to Kazimierz to rescue other Infected Knights, enacting a daring plan that left the leadership of Kazimierz stunned and unable to retaliate. All in a day’s work for Flametail, the 6* Pioneer Vanguard specializing in Dodging, hitting multiple enemies with one swing, and rapid-fire DP generation.

Flametail focuses on Dodging to an extent not seen with previous Operators. This led to a mixed reception upon release: Dodge buffs give diminishing returns when stacked, so it was unclear how reliable her kit was going to be. It turns out that Flametail can be very evasive and output high damage (for a Vanguard) while doing so. In fact, she can be surprisingly reliable, but it helps if you understand how her kit works together… as well as the ways it doesn’t work so well.

  • E1 Talent, Vanguard Swordsmanship—At E1, Flametail’s next attack hits twice after she Dodges. At E2, the buffed attack also hits multiple enemies equal to Flametail’s Block count. However, the buff doesn’t stack if she Dodges multiple times within a single attack interval.
  • E2 Talent, Pinus Sylvestris Leader—Grants Physical Dodge to all Kazimierz Operators while Flametail is on the field. Simple and useful.
  • S1, Quick Intuition—Automatic Skill that generates a (very) small amount of DP and allows Flametail to automatically Dodge the next physical attack. However, the Skill has low DP generation and it does not stack multiple Dodges.
  • S2, Pinus Sylvestris—Generates DP and inflicts Physical damage + Stun on multiple nearby enemies. Afterwards, gives nearby allies a Physical Dodge buff for several seconds. However, the Stun and the buff both have a short duration, and the buff is too low to be especially useful in most situations.
  • S3, Flameheart—Generates DP and grants Flametail faster ASPD, increased ATK, Block Count +1, and a massive Physical/ Arts Dodge buff. (Block Count +1 is particularly nice with the E2 version of Vanguard Swordsmanship.) The Dodge chance is so high that Flametail is quite safe for the Skill duration, and the cycle time on the Skill is great. However, it also suffers from a very brief duration.

The combination of low SP cost and short duration on Flameheart makes it a good Skill for quick bursts of power, handily countering intermittent waves of mid-tier enemies. With a little luck, Flameheart can even be used to punch way above Flametail’s weight class—the high Dodge chance and great interplay with Vanguard Swordsmanship can create impressive results.

If you’re looking for pure DP generation or long-term survivability, Flametail is unlikely to be the best choice for the job. Too many other Operators and archetypes are stronger in those specific roles. Flametail’s value comes from being able to practically ignore damage (unless she gets very unlucky) and retaliate with rapidfire double attacks from Vanguard Swordsmanship, all while generating a decent amount of DP. When you need a knight in shining armor who can hold the line early in a map, Flametail’s combination of short-term evasion and bursty wave-clear might help you save the day.

Newbie Tier List Explanation

Her DP generation isn't that great, and her kit is geared towards later-game challenging situations where she can take advantage of her dodge and the survivability and DPS it provides, which mostly requires E2.

Skill Discussion

Roguelike
S3M3 A+ S A

In the age of Flagpipe, Flametail brings a shocking amount of utility that has continually proven itself in the end game since her release. Dodges don't usually have a lot of value but her very high chance on S3 makes her virtually invulnerable a third of the time while maintaining good DPS (for a Vanguard).

Mastery in her S3 has the best return on value of any Pioneer Vanguard skill, providing relatively large improvements to her cycle time which is vitally important to her role. Her grades are relatively high here compared to her meta value as a unit. The strength of the Flagpipe meta really hurts her overall value so she is not a must raise. However her S3 masteries are incredibly valuable if you do choose to raise her, bringing her grades up a bit.

Her S2 is modestly popular for it's team support, but the associated dodge chance is far lower which adds an unpalatable component of RNG to the mix. The mastery gains on it are also far lower, so most people shouldn't bother and it is ungraded here.

Although capable in the Roguelike, she is on the weaker end of picks. Vanguards as a class are just not that valuable thanks to Myrtle and the restrictions of Hope costs. Still, she is a competent fighter, and her sustain and DPS are both useful. S3 mastery is still the key skill for that mode.

Integrated Strategies Tier List Explanation

General IS Notes

+ Powerful damage for a Vanguard.
+ High dodge chance on S3 gives her a measure of early tankiness not otherwise that common.
- Even with her high dodge chance, the chance of RNG failure is unappealing since it can end a run.
- Not as impactful for the Hope cost as most other 6*s.
- Not Myrtle.

IS2 Specific Notes

Flametail, like all Pioneers, is a competent pick, but one rarely worth the Hope cost. There are ultimately better options for the same costs and no relic truly elevates her to the next level.

Good Relics

Blunt Claws - Proficiency
Blunt Claws - Mastery

Relic Interactions

Benefits strongly from anything that improves her cycle time.

Recommended Promotion

E2 strongly recommended since S3 is her key skill. At E1 Flametail is significantly less effective.

Profile

An Infected Knight of Kazimierz, and practical leader of spontaneously established Infected Knightclub 'Pinus Sylvestris.' Came into contact with Rhodes Island during cooperation with Kazimierz, and sought Rhodes Island's treatment of her own accord.

Clinical Analysis

Increase Trust to 25.
Imaging tests show the indistinct outlines of internal organs, obscured by abnormal shadows. Originium granules detected in the circulatory system. The subject is confirmed to be infected with Oripathy.

[Cell-Originium Assimilation] 8%
Partially visible crystal distribution on the surface of Operator Flametail's body.

[Blood Originium-Crystal Density] 0.22u/L
Operator Flametail's infection grants no optimistic outlook, especially considering non-standard medical treatment sustained in Kazimierz and its lack of ability to curb her disease in a timely fashion.

The institution of Infected knights is in no way friendly treatment of the Infected by Kazimierz. All 'special cases' without exception, and Oripathy itself remains a cause for exclusion. However, from a certain perspective, the lust for profit in Kazimierz exceeds even its fear of Oripathy. It's this that allows the Infected to climb onto the stage of 'knight competitions', providing entertainment to the masses. This amounts to the same tragedy suffered by Infected in other countries, but takes a form clearly characteristic of Kazimierz—at least, for the time being.

Operator Flametail's codename originates from her knight title, but those who know her all call her by her name, Sona. She doesn't come from any age-old knight family, and she's far from any gifted knight prodigy. Flametail Knight used to just be the Zalak girl Sona, no more than an ordinary Kazimierzian living in a Zalak settlement. It was one day when a Catastrophe changed the course of Sona's life, owing to the Kaliska knight family's neglect of their few subjects, leading to the destruction of Sona's home. Her family, friends and once peaceful life vanished like mist in a single night. The young Zalak girl wasn't strong enough to accept the truth straight away—and despite her past being far out of sight these days, every time her home and her past are mentioned, the conversation-loving, ever cheerily smiling Sona's mood always, unconsciously, halts for just a moment. And we have no idea how Sona, that helpless Zalak, made it out of the disaster. We only know that by the time Pinus Sylvestris's other members came to know her, Sona was already the way she is today, as if she's never changed.
'I can tell something's hanging between the two of them, but the past comes up from time to time the and I never hear much more than, well, Greynuty's old knight family failed Sona and whatever.' —Wild Mane
'Of course Sona's not as strong as you people think. I've actually seen her crying in secr... uh, forget I said that.' —Ashlock

Archive File 2

Increase Trust to 100.
The 'Pinus Sylvestris' for which the Knightclub is named reportedly comes from Flametail and Ashlock's hometown. This plantlife on the verge of extinction nowadays was once an emblem of magnificence, beauty and tenacity.
After leaving her hometown, Flametail lived in a booming commercial city for a time, eking out a living on the lowest rung. Unexpectedly, however, that city became part of the Kawalerielki Alliance, and through this, Flametail learned of another way out—Infected knighthood. It wasn't long at this time since Flametail had caught Oripathy, and she'd never gone through any training related to knight competitions, but she really didn't have all that many choices for a living.
At the start, independent knight Sona was thrown into a cage filled with vicious beasts and traps, and after that came an artificial jungle, and a sealed-off skyscraper. Sona realized what the Infected experienced was a world of difference to the immaculate, bright competition knights on TV—they were all voluntarily spectated playthings, and their own lives practically became the one worth they held.
What definitively changed Sona actually was an official knight competition. Knight vs. knight, Infected vs. Infected. But whether Sona herself, or the Pinus Sylvestris members we talked with afterwards, no one would touch on what everyone went through during that period. However, what we can be sure of is that that blood sport of Infected knights thoroughly changed her. In the moment she held her riches and 'Flametail' title from the Knights Association high, the seed was planted in Sona's heart, waiting to root and bud.

Archive File 3

Increase Trust to 150.
Beyond the Infected knights, Sona still holds decent fame in other Infected communities of Kawalerielki. Pinus Sylvestris Knightclub used all the wealth they earned from knight competitions to house Infected—but in the course of things, Infected numbers began to exceed what Sona imagined. At first, she just wanted to try to unite the Infected knights, to find survival in the ruthless wipe out qualifiers. After they found their footing, they became aware of an enormous amount of Infected existing in poverty in the Grand Knight Territory, with no means to become knights, forced to live in the city's sub-levels. And the first to decide, to know she would help every Infected she could, was Flametail Knight Sona.
She didn't take long to go from founding Pinus Sylvestris Knightclub to rescuing the Infected of Kawalerielki. No speeches to stir the heart, no carefully detailed plan, it was practically by chance that Sona led the Infected knights to see today. She didn't come to Rhodes Island just for herself and Pinus Sylvestris's knights either. More than that, it was a hope that the vulnerable Infected they guided could seek Rhodes Island's treatment.
Though the Infected experience in Kawalerielki is complex, the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi and General Chamber of Commerce remain in constant friction to this day. The city's neon shades and loud crowds have imperceptibly led people to accept a fact—knights are no longer what they used to be. The people have forgotten what glory the knights once stood for. And despite Sona never having truly treated herself as a knight, and never stressing any point of glory or justice, she undoubtedly, wholly fits the part of that romantic imagination of knights.
'Sona is a true knight. It gladdens me that in the Kazimierz of now, I could still meet a fellow companion like her.' —Nearl

Archive File 4

Increase Trust to 200.
We often forget Flametail's age and her life as an ordinary girl. Only in very, very occasional circumstances do we see another side of her.
She's fond of cute things, likes eating candy, and has a strong curiosity for novel equipment. If they hadn't been infected, forced to take this path, perhaps Pinus Sylvestris's people would all be living some other life in Kazimierz.
Flametail's intermittent appearances on the landship aren't marked just by the core of Infected knights; her smile, cheerful attitude, and nature of pressing forward when running into difficulty involuntarily draw in everyone surrounding. Quite a number of Kazimierz-born operators even head for the Grand Knight Territory of their own accord thanks to Sona, and though it's led to her joking along the lines of 'Wait, is this Knightclub poaching talent from Rhodes Island now?', Flametail's leaderly charm as a knight of Kazimierz is clear to see.
Of course, Flametail has admitted herself that there are three knights she's come to respect from the heart after getting to know them a little. The Radiant Knight, a.k.a. our Nearl, certainly holds a place, and as for who the other two are, Flametail Knight has left us on a cliffhanger.

Promotion File

Upgrade to Elite LV2.
Pinus Sylvestris Knightclub was, at first, established to allow the Infected to survive in the Grand Knight Territory. Sona was right in choosing her partners. Fartooth Knight, Ashlock Knight, Wild Mane Knight; they all have their own reasons for fighting.
Now, with the dust settled, whether it's the K.G.C.C. or the Armorless Union exploiting them, whether Kazimierz hasn't remedied the tiniest bit, they've escaped, they've survived, and moreover, they've saved many doing it.
So what next?
Ashley surely trusts her most. Silently, Fartooth follows her too. Wild Mane, just as ever, wants her to give a direction to charge in.
Seemingly since it started, Sona has been the one most lacking a reason for standing on the frontline.
But of course she doesn't really 'lack reason.' No one who lacks faith can, under a city grinding humanity away, put up a struggle to that degree.
Exceedingly few people simply realize—like our Radiant Knight, Nearl does—that some people are born with a mind for devotion and a consciousness of sacrifice, that some are innately able to fight for a grand, distant goal.
And this goal, and Rhodes Island's, are presently highly identical.
In future? In future, well... the present Land of the Knights is a mile from the 'Knights' already. Just what its future will be, by all appearances, isn't much to do with us.

Appointed as Assistant Hm? Sure you don't need my help, Doctor? Got something interesting, maybe?
Talk 1 D'ja know how wild it is, as a Kazimierz Knight, to see a 'company' actually trying so hard to treat Infected? It's a mind-melter, trust me. Yeah, seriously. Justyna still keeps wondering at me how Rhodes Island turns a profit.
Talk 2 Doctor, question? Can I take a look at Operator Nearl's battle records? Uh, no, I'm just a little curious—yeah? Thanks, Doctor! Let's see, uh... oh, man, the one with Iwona. Maybe I oughta be telling her to keep it reined in...
Talk 3 Ashley and me? We met through the Major. Something told me 'this Knight's got something going on,' so I went over after just to give her a shout. Jeez, thinking about it, I've got a talent for scouting, don't I?
Talk after Promotion 1 'Platinum,' huh. I know what happened with her after, but still. No plans to be her friend. Y'know, before, we said the Armorless Union, the General Chamber of Commerce, were our greatest enemies. But to be real... ahaha, it's the whole age we live in we're dissenting against.
Talk after Promotion 2 The titans we call cities rumble forth, neon lights the sky, car engines stand for what were summer bug chirps... and too much gets tossed away, flattened undertread. It gets me, all those people... that's no proper ending for their lives. Infected or not, we all oughta be searching for a new way forward.
Talk after Trust Increase 1 Doctor! Heard from Gravel and Amiya, you faced off with the Armorless Union during the Major? And you're the one who sniffed out the Area 0 plot? How'd you—wait, hold on, lemme bring a chair over, and some snacks while I'm at it. Alright, Teach! Take it away!
Talk after Trust Increase 2 Before I met Ashley, I honestly figured I'd be fine if I just kept living. But now, with Justyna, Iwona, Maria—and the Radiant Knight... I'm prepared to fight alongside them. Throw that life of mine out there for them. It's why I fight on.
Talk after Trust Increase 3 Maybe, one day. When the whole Knight thing vanishes and everyone figures out deep inside just what a knight was. Maybe then, Kazimierz can be peaceful in the truest sense. She argued that to me, the Radiant Knight, and it's got me thinking I'd like to take in more. More sights, further out. Maybe there's... more I should be doing, y'know.
Idle You relax, Doctor. *sigh* Man, wonder what Ashley and the others are up to right now.
Onboard Pinus Sylvestris Knightclub Leader, the Flametail Knight, Sona! You're the Doctor? Mmm, well, you're kinda not like I imagined, but hey. I'm under your wing from here on out, Doctor!
Watching Battle Record Huh. The stuff you watch for real combat's pretty crazy different from the Major.
Promotion 1 It's a first for me, getting promoted without commercials or camera flashes. Pinus Sylvestris Knightclub Leader, the Flametail Knight, Sona! Continuing the stride!
Promotion 2 Used to worry how an ever-heartless fight would lead us all down a messed-up way, but now... heheh, I guess ideals are something you oughta have. Aren't they, Doctor?
Added to Squad Ashley not gonna come with?
Appointed as Squad Leader 'Flametail' Sona, spearheading and rolling out!
Depart Live up to duty!
Begin Operation Enemy spotted. Be real nice if they entered single file like the Knights do, though.
Selecting Operator 1 Any instructions for me?
Selecting Operator 2 Feels fresh every time, someone giving me orders.
Deployment 1 Can your eyes keep up?
Deployment 2 A new challenge, huh? Heh.
In Battle 1 C'mon, let's pick up the pace.
In Battle 2 Haha, losing sight?
In Battle 3 Doesn't feel good, does it? When your target vanishes from sight?
In Battle 4 'Tail like a shooting star,' that's what they say.
4-star Result Maybe the world'll give us a choice in the end, but right now, we can only choose to fight to the last. Because we're Knights, because we're Infected. Because we're alive.
3-star Result We've won a hell of a lot of times before, Doctor. Here and now, though, we're struggling for our own destiny, our own future. That's the real fight, isn't it?
Sub 3-star Result This sure as hell isn't a competition, Doctor. Letting them off easy's not gonna win the crowd over, y'know?
Operation Failure Everyone, retreat! Let me hold the rear! I'm fine, I'm fine! Got a great juking track record.
Assigned to Facility Wow, this sure beats the Grand Knight Territory sewers. Guesstimating a couple hundred times better?
Tap Hyah!? What the hell?
Trust Tap You're wondering how I usually dress? Mm, uhh... ahaha...
Title Arknights.
Greeting Morning to you, Doctor.
