Can you link a Nintendo account after you started playing ?

I have a friend who hasn't linked her party to a Nintendo account due to not having one. She is now interested in it but she has a pretty good progress and doesn't want to erase it. So is it possible to link a already existing party to a Nintendo account without the party being erased ?
