Hanagumori refers to light gray skies in cherry blossom season. It's fitting for Patchouli, who prefers to stay at home most of the time. You could also interpret it as Patchouli hiding the sun to protect her vampire best friend and her vampire best friend's little sister. Patchouli is an elemental specialist, so her Phase and Essence endowments are a little unusual.

Patchouli compensates for her elemental weaknesses with other elements, so she resists all five Phases. Even though she is a Western magician, she is more familiar with the five Phases than your regular Eastern magician.

However, she has her guard down when it comes to Star Essence, the one element she does not have covered.

Five Seasons

Patchouli Knowledge's Focus Shot. Her bullet hell attack commands five different elements. It's called Five Seasons because it uses the elements of the four seasons—wood, fire, metal, and water—plus earth in a circular arrangement of bullets, which she launches with skill and grace.

The Last Philosopher's Stone

Patchouli Knowledge's Last Word (a Touhou LW original). A bullet hell attack based on Fire/Water/Wood/Metal/Earth Sign: Philosopher's Stone, Patchouli's Last Word in the Touhou Project main series, but changed into a crystal form. While Patchouli doesn't think of alchemy as one of her talents, her skill far surpasses that of most ordinary alchemists.

Patchouli is skilled in handling almost every element, making her exceptional even among magicians. The elemental magic she specializes in is also called spirit magic. Patchouli can use each element individually with incredible skill, but she also makes the best of her ability to use multiple elements by enhancing certain elements to reduce her weaknesses. Perhaps she is applying the five Phases' properties of inter-promotion and inter-regulation.

Character Analysis

The Girl of Knowledge and Shade, Patchouli Knowledge is a magician living in the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Like Alice Margatroid, Patchouli is a magician by race, not just by occupation - unlike a human such as Marisa Kirisame, who is just a magician in occupation. Unlike Alice, however, Patchouli was born as a magician. This has had something of an impact on her physical capability, leaving her with asthma, an overall weak body, and a tendency to lose in contests of strength to even mere humans. Don’t mistake that for weakness - she more than makes up for it with an array of powerful magic that would leave most other magicians in awe.

For farming, Patchouli’s Last Word, The Last Philosopher's Stone, is unfortunately, in spite of its All targeting and front-loaded nature, not quite strong enough to farm events on Lunatic, as she just needs too much between having mixed attack types and no accuracy in her kit. Stick to Hard or have her bring some backup.

For harder fights, Patchouli is unparalleled in how many Element Breaks she brings. With access to Spell Cards absolutely flooded with Sun and Moon Breaks, and basic shots and a Last Word with Fire, Wood, Earth, Metal, and Water, Patchouli brings every Element except Star to the table. There is, however, a caveat to this - due to how her Elemental Bullets are spread out, she often won’t manage more than 2 Breaks per target for her Last Word and Basic Shots. Additionally, this spread means she requires an intense amount of Spirit Power to fully utilize those breaks - further complicated by the low hit count of the Bullets, and her own lack of Accuracy buffs. Finally, she won’t be contributing much damage outside of that - between low levels of Yin ATK UP, and mixed damage types, she doesn’t hit very hard and it’s somewhat difficult to support her to do more.

Still, these faults only matter so much. Provide her with Spirit Power or Accuracy support (or if possible, both) from a mix of her teammates and her own Story Cards, and she’ll be shattering Barriers like few others can. Just make sure she’s got a nice comfy chair and a book ready after the fighting’s done, or she might be a bit cross at you.

Patchouli is both extremely Spirit Power hungry and prone to missing her attacks. As such, you'll ideally give her Story Cards which grant either Spirit Power or Accuracy, and have her teammates support what her Spell Cards do not. For Spirit Power, The Witch of Scarlet Dreams will be her best option to access majority of her bullet lines. However, she can make do with budget cards such as Midnight Tea and It's Spring as most of her bullets are accessible at 2.00P.

In terms of Accuracy support, she can make do with a simple card like Valued Tools of the Trade. Moreover, she ideally prefers Accuracy support from her teammates, as it is much harder for party Power support to compare with the Power support that the story cards can grant.

The Secret God of the Sky

Patchouli's Last Word has two major issues: the damage on it is mixed equally between Yin and Yang, and most of the Bullets on it are only 1 hit, meaning that for both barrier breaking and damage purposes, they are unfortunately prone to missing. With these issues at hand, any Story Card with at least 2 Levels of Accuracy UP, such as Valued Tools of the Trade, is her best possible option.

If you can already provide her with Accuracy support, a Heavy Bullet UP card like The Secret God of the Sky or a Yang ATK UP card such as Ordinary Magician will be her best option.

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

Instant Magic [Sniper] can be leveled up first to Level 8 to guarantee the 2 levels of Yin ATK UP from the skill, as well as leveled up to Level 10 to reduce the turn cooldown from 6 turns to 5 if truly desired. The other two skills do not gain any significant advantages. The Focus DOWN from Instant Magic [Stealth] does decrease her chance of being targeted, but means the rest of her party will take more damage during All-targeting attacks, which can endanger your other Friends. Firebolt can synergize with Friends with Burn anomaly breaks while being a decent debuff, but leveling the skill itself only raises the chance of adding 2 Burn anomalies instead of 1.
