Fuu'u
Expand
Fuu'u refers to wind and rain or wind with rain in it. Aya is a crow tengu, an avatar of wind, so this temperament is a good fit for her. Aya is endowed with Wood Phase, as a tengu, and Moon Essence, with her focus on sociality.

The strong and kind Wood Phase resists Water Phase, because water nourishes wood, but it is weak to Metal Phase, because metal carves wood.

The cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence resists the alluring and arrogant Sun Essence, but it is weak to the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence.

Character Shots

Aya Shameimaru's Spread Shot. She uses a leaf fan to send out gusts of wind in this attack. It is very fitting for a tengu, a youkai with the power to stir up gales of wind.

Aya Shameimaru's Last Word (a Touhou LW original). She hurls logs sucked up into a tornado at her target. There is a mountain god named Izuna Gongen who is said to be a warrior god with the shape of a crow tengu. According to one theory, he is also the god of ascetics and ninja. With his many faces, he embodies the multiplicity and mystique of the tengu.

Character Ability

Capable of manipulating wind
Expand
Aya Shameimaru's ability as a tengu. Crow tengu use their fans to make tengu gales... Or well, that is the usual image of them, and Aya's ability is a simple representation of that. Many of her Spell Cards use wind too. However, if you keep in mind that she is also a reporter, the meaning of "wind" changes. The idiom "the way the wind blows" refers to how a situation is developing, just like how a reporter is always keeping an eye on the latest developments in news. No matter how truthful or transparent news tries to be, in the end, it is still a selection of specific information, with bias from the reporter's impressions. If the tengu wanted to, she could easily manipulate the news in Gensokyo, blowing the wind in the direction she wanted it to go... But you probably do not have to worry about that from Aya's Bunbunmaru Newspaper.
Immune to Barrier Status: Burn & Poison.
When using Boost, party's Evasion 1 level UP (1 turn).

Character Analysis

Aya Shameimaru was released on September 9th, 2021 in "Prayer: Creators of Fiction(?) & Fact." For more up-to-date analysis, be sure to visit the Discord Official Discord Server.

The crow tengu Aya Shameimaru takes pride for being the resident reporter in Gensokyo for any incident, youkai, or other event of interest. Despite stating that she only reports the truth, she isn’t shy of adding blatant lies to her reports for the sake of a good scoop for her Bunbunmaru Newspaper. Danmaku photos make for the perfect spice of an article, which is all Aya needs to make her move. With a camera and a speed that safely puts Aya up there as the quickest of Gensokyo, many youkai fear becoming a part of one of her “scoops.” In LostWord, Aya utilizes her speed and wind manipulation to fight on your behalf.

For farming, Aya will always need at least two turns, and will want to use Illusionary Dominance first with a Spirit Power UP Story Card attached, before using her Last Word. If extra oomph is needed, use Whirl Sign: Maple Leaf Fan first, with any Yang ATK UP Story Card that lasts 3 turns to preserve the buffs before using Illusionary Dominance. Make sure to only use her skills on the turn of her Last Word too, as they are all only one turn in duration.

Aya can assist a fair bit in more challenging fights as well. All of her spell cards provide 3 Wood breaks at 2 Spirit Power, with 1/2/3 breaks at 0/1/2 Spirit Power from her normal Spell Cards and 1/1/3 at 0/1/2 Spirit Power with her Last Word. She can even give 1 Wood break from her Focus shot if she didn’t provide enough Wood element bullets already. Both of her spell cards come with notable extra effects. Whirl Sign: Maple Leaf Fan contains Sure-Hit bullets on her 1 and 2 Spirit Power Wood bullets, meaning these 2 Wood breaks will always be successful no matter the accuracy or evasion. Extra utility comes from her other spell card, Illusionary Dominance, by decreasing all of the opponents’ Evasion levels so the rest of her team can get their hits in. Just be aware that Aya will need to choose between Breaks or setting up for a higher damaging Last Word, due to the low turn counts of her buffs forcing her to pick either Spirit Power or buffs on her Story Cards.

Not much else stands out for the tengu reporter, unfortunately. Her Character Ability of immunity to Burn and Poison prevents the Yin/Yang ATK and DEF debuffs that those anomalies include, but definitely will not be relevant that often. Her second skill, Tengu Gale, is special in that it only has a 1 Turn Cooldown at the max level, but only provides one level of Agility. Outside of decreasing the Evasion of all enemies, Aya provides no other helpful buffs to the party.

Everything sums up to make Aya a nice Solo nuke with some additional minor benefits. She can use her wind for some nice Wood breaks and speed by to slow the enemies down, but not much else beyond that.

Here are the scaling for Aya’s Slice bullets:
Shutter Chance Izuna Drop: 50%/50%/55%/60%/60%/70%

Story Card Recommendations

(Card recommendations last updated on May 30, 2023)

Spell Card

Aya needs to choose between either focusing on Breaks, or focusing on damage. More Spirit Power in order to have access to more Wood breaks is always beneficial. Whirl Sign: Maple Leaf Fan has decent accuracy and Sure-Hit bullets to not need an Accuracy buff, same with Illusionary Dominance’s Evasion debuff on opponents. For raising her damage, look to a mix of Yang ATK UP and Agility UP, to preserve the buffs from her skills.  Looking into cards that buff Yang ATK or have Yang ATK stat sticks will help contribute to her Last Word.

Last Word

For farming purposes, increasing Aya’s accuracy to ensure that every bullet of her Last Word will connect is important, as she lacks a way to buff her own Accuracy. Otherwise, further Yang ATK boosts can be looked into to maximize her damage output. Lastly, Thunder Beat will provide her with both Wood and Energy DMG up, if you can already provide her with ATK UP elsewhere.

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

Granting more Yang ATK and Agility to make her Last Word’s bullets hit even harder, Tengu Rain of Stones should definitely be prioritized over her other skills. Do note that the 2 levels of Agility are guaranteed upon level 5 of the skill, and 3 levels of Yang ATK are ensured at max level 10. Otherwise, Tengu Gale already provides 1 level of Agility no matter the skill’s level, so the only benefit would be a faster Cooldown. Evasion is nothing impressive, which applies to why Tengu Knockdown is the last to be recommended here.

Character Strengths

+Decent Turn 1 Solo targeting Last Word

+Above average access to Wood breaks on all of her spell cards; Solo/All access to 1/2/3 Wood breaks at 0/1/2 Spirit Power for her 1st and 2nd cards

+Evasion debuff on all enemies

Character Weaknesses

-Little party utility outside of debuffing enemies; can only buff herself

-Lacking in powerful skills outside of Yang Atk/Agility buff

-Low turn count on buffs forces her to choose between Breaks or more damage
