Character Analysis
Medicine Melancholy (Medical Automaton) was released on June 23rd 2023 on Prayer “Medical Automaton Ultra Festival".
We all know how toxic this doll youkai is (at least when it comes to her powers), and we are all probably aware of her resentment towards humans, but it seems this variant of her is some kind of cyborg, with all kinds of nifty machinery to work with, seemingly used for medical procedures and keeping everyone healthy. Who knows if it was a certain Skilled Droid Engineer that was able to bring out the best of this iteration of Medicine Melancholy through a multitude of enhancements? Whatever was done that led to Medicine being the way she is right here, she does seem to be gradually overcoming her fear of humans, and her mastery of medical machinery may be realized in the future!
B5 Medicine Melancholy is a Heal-Class Friend with a sky-high HP Stat, solid anomaly utility, and a good chunk of Metal breaks.
As a Healer
- By far the highest HP Stat in the game, coming in at 10000.
- Heals the team’s HP via Skills 1 and 3 as well as her Last Word (35%, 45% and 80% respectively). With the percentage of team HP healed depending on B5 Medicine’s HP, her HP being as high as it is means most other friends can easily reach full HP from a Skill alone.
- Heals any anomalies inflicted onto the team via Skill 1 or Last Word Post-ATK
- Removes any Binds/Stat Debuffs on the team through Skill 3 and Spell Card 1, and via Passive 3, will always remove a Bind/Stat Debuff on herself every turn.
- As per her Ability, any layer of Poison inflicted onto herself restores her HP by 5%. B5 Medicine can already do this on herself via her Skill 2.
- Adds a Barrier to the team through Skill 1 and Spell Card 2.
As an Attacker / Supporter
- Increases the team’s Yang ATK by 4 Stages with Skill 3, and can increase her own when Boosting, or through her Last Word Bullet Line.
- Increases the team’s Accuracy whenever she Grazes.
- Killer range includes Human, Kaiju, Lunar Capital, Beast, Insect and Flower.
As a Debuffer / Utility
- Debuffs an enemy’s Yang DEF and CRIT DEF through her Last Word’s Pre-ATK.
- Other miscellaneous debuffs are performed, such as CRIT Evasion on all enemies via Spell Card 1, Yang ATK on all enemies via Spell Card 2, and Agility on some bullet lines.
- Lots of Poison anomalies inflicted onto her enemies: Skill 2, Spell Card 1 and Spell Card 2.
- If inflicted with Burn or Paralyze, she can gain 0.20 Spirit Power as per her Ability.
- Takes 35% less damage from Metal elements.
Story Card Recommendations
(Card recommendations last updated on June 22, 2023)
Spell Card
B5 Medicine will want those Spirit Power cards, although if you want to use it to benefit the team instead, that works well too. She doesn’t have natural CRIT ATK buffs, and with Accuracy only gained via Grazing, maybe you might want more of that too. Lastly, if you care about damage with these Spell Cards, that is also an option, but make sure the above is accounted for.
Spirit Power UP: The Witch of Scarlet Dreams, Our Dream, Dancer in the Puddle, Mountain of Faith, Youkai Mountain Anniversary, Taking a Breather in Spring, Post-Training Kinako Milk, Frozen-Over Gensokyo
Team Spirit Power UP: Myouren Temple Anniversary, Divine Spirit Tajikarao, Dancers Take the Stage, Utopia Tea Time
CRIT ATK UP: Worlds in Hand, Divine Spirit Tajikarao, New Year’s Shrine Visit VI, Miracle Mallet, Bloody Order
Accuracy UP: Ability Cards?, Taking a Breather in Spring, Valued Tools of the Trade, The Lunar War, Poltergeist Sisters’ Concert, 8th Hakurei Shrine Fall Reitaisai, Shichi-Go-San School Visit?!
Liquid Bullet Power UP: Resort Stars, Beach Sanshoku Geidontei, Frozen-Over Gensokyo
Heavy Bullet Power UP: The Secret God of the Sky, Summer God Fantasy Sea
Last Word
Her Last Word is both Full Slash and Full Metal, meaning no card is more perfect for B5 Medicine than Disillusion, which has a 50% Metal boost and a 45% Slash Boost. Other great alternatives for her that do the job well include Mysterious Sword Master and The Moon and Izayoi with their own 50% Slash effects. Any other options that boost Metal or Slash can work too should these options above not be available.
Character Skill Level Up Recommendations
First up will be Memory Water. All those Poison anomalies will be enhanced, but more importantly, so will that all-important Spirit Power gain for B5 Medicine. Next up is Trepanning. That team-wide Yang ATK going from 2 stages to 4 stages is huge, and definitely worth taking advantage of. Last of them is more trivial, but Swallowing Aid Jelly’s mainly going to be reducing the cooldown from 4 turns to 3 instead. The HP healing does go up a bit, and if you’re not a fan of that little bit of RNG (in this case, anomaly healing), it’s possible one may not even consider leveling up this Skill for the time being, but we know Ultra Festival Units have been prone to that Fantasy Rebirth treatment…
Character Strengths
H-H-High Healing
B5 Medicine’s high HP being at 10000 (the highest in the game as of her release) means her team will be able to recover their HP very easily via 2 of her Skills. Since the amount of HP healed for the team is dependent on the healer’s HP (in this case, B5 Medicine), in most cases, anyone with considerably lower HP will easily be sure to have full HP again. She also heals anomalies on her team (be careful if they are ones the team benefits from) as well as the team’s Binds/Stat debuffs via Skill 3 and Spell Card 1 in addition to Passive 3 healing her own ones every turn.
Good Chunk of Metal Breaks
With 6 Metal breaks on her Last word and both Spell Cards having 3 layers of Metal, B5 Medicine isn’t bad at all when it comes to this element.
Character Weaknesses
General Breaking Aside from Metal is Lackluster
While the aforementioned Metal breaks are solid, other elements being scattered in her Shots and Spell Cards as well as only being able to break Poison anomalies outside of All-Targeting Focus Shot and Solo-Targeting Last Word really can be a hindrance. You could use all those Poison breaks to further weaken a conventional enemy’s Yang stats for damage output, but that leads us to our other downside…
S-S-Struggles with Damage
A mix of Yin and Yang in her kit hurts B5 Medicine a lot, especially in her Last Word. Despite the Specular Bullets on the Yin lines, her Yang ATK at 1825 compared with her Yin ATK at 825 is a drastic difference, and it leaves you wondering what could have been if her Last Word was purely Yang. That aside, the Yang DEF and CRIT DEF debuff on an enemy is huge, and if her Killers land (mainly Human, Lunar Capital and Capital on Line 1), you can still get a good outcome here.
