Seikanun
Expand
Seikanun (a Touhou LW original) refers to interstellar clouds of gas, dust, and plasma. This is the temperament of Medicine, an abandoned tool left in the Capital's Underground Waste Ward. Her temperament was reformed by exchanging magical principles for the laws of physics.

This temperament is specialized to resist Moon Essence and Star Essence.

The Spread Shot of Medicine Melancholy, the mechanical tool (a Touhou LW original). She administers inhaled medicine in this attack. Poison is clearly a form of information because when cellular tissue receives the input of poison (i.e., false information), it malfunctions. This could also be said for medicine, with the only difference being whether the effects are desirable or not.

The Focus Shot of Medicine Melancholy, the mechanical tool (a Touhou LW original). She administers a medical injection in this attack. Everyone's afraid of injections. There's no way getting a needle jabbed into your body could ever be pleasant, and all humans hold an instinctual aversion to anything that could potentially destroy them beyond repair. Venomous snakes, wasps, and scorpions are probably hated for similar reasons. But don't worry... she's only administering medicine.

A Spell Card of Medicine Melancholy, the mechanical tool (a Touhou LW original). She performs a transfusion in this attack. The medical procedure of transferring bodily fluids, particularly blood, into humans took quite a while to catch on. Many people considered blood to be the source of life itself, inherited from one's ancestors, and something impure. When you consider these beliefs attached to blood, it's easy to imagine how profane the act of receiving someone else's blood was back then. They focused more on the mental and spiritual side of things than the physical. However, they weren't exactly wrong in their belief that blood records information about one's ancestors. Though, in truth, this applies to every cell in the body―blood is just easier to extract.

A Spell Card of Medicine Melancholy, the mechanical tool (a Touhou LW original). She administers medication in this attack. The history of medicine is a history of philosophy. In the past, people believed in the simple concept that universal truths are logical and consistent. They assumed that mother nature's laws govern the human body, that celestial objects influence the mind, and that there is only a tiny disconnect between humans and the rest of the universe. That's why so many ''medical cures'' caught on without any empirical evidence of their effectiveness. They used false logic to prescribe treatment methods based on how the properties of an illness related to universal truths. These methods were so prevalent for so long that the concepts of observing the effects of treatments, determining whether they actually work, and improving the processes through repeated testing were truly revolutionary. But thanks to that revolution, we're blessed with the medical knowledge and pharmaceutical products we have today.

The Last Word of Medicine Melancholy, the mechanical tool (a Touhou LW original). She performs surgery in this attack. Non-invasive treatments such as medication have quite a long history, unlike surgery, where doctors have to physically reach into a patient's body to treat them. The inside of a body is sacred while also being impure, so the adoption of surgical treatments that encroach on that domain was a big turning point in human history. However, the medical treatments of the future will develop beyond this. Medical nanomachines will blur the line between non-invasive and surgical treatments. By prescribing nanomachines in a similar method to medicinal inhalants, it will become possible for people to receive completely non-invasive surgery from the machines moving within their own bodies.

Even without nanomachines, this mechanical doll, well-versed in human anatomy, can treat any condition by administering medicine and performing minimal surgical procedures. This is the ideal medical treatment that humanity has always strived for.

Character Ability

Capable of manipulating poison (Concealed)
Expand
The ability of Medicine Melancholy, the mechanical tool (a Touhou LW original). Medicine's original ability became this one when it was concealed by the system of the Capital. However, due to miscellaneous adjustments and the construction of alternate functions, Medicine's poison-manipulating capabilities are unchanged.

In quite a few parallel worlds, there is an organization called Xanadu located in the Capital's Underground Waste Ward. Even in worlds where there is no place called Xanadu, there is often an organization with that same name. These organizations are predominantly composed of ''tools'' that were produced by the Capital and later cast aside when new tools were developed (usually by the Temple of Plenty). This is why these tools are sometimes referred to as the Wasted. For some reason, they bear a striking resemblance to the youkai found in Gensokyo before it disappeared, even though they were supposedly produced in the Capital. Their memories and abilities might be lacking or different, but it's impossible not to think of them as the same youkai whose names they share. Thus, it begs to reason that the Capital created these tools based on something that already existed.

There's no doubt that tools are an essential part of Gensokyo, as can be seen with the Satellites that accompany incident resolvers, such as Reimu's Yin-Yang-Orbs and Marisa's mini hakkero. There are also tsukumogami like those pictured in the Night Parade Scroll, instrument-based poltergeists, demon books, the Miracle Mallet, the Jeweled Pagoda, and a sutra scroll made from Makai materials... You could even call the P items a kind of tool.

However, even among all these tools, dolls are special. They are figures of human beings. Dolls are obviously a type of tool, but you could also say that tools are types of dolls because all tools can be interpreted as parts taken from a doll. Even tools that don't seem to resemble any part of the human body are, in fact, extensions of the base human form. Humans cannot live without tools, so tools are a part of them.

Tools function thanks to the magic they receive from humans, just like how arms and legs move after receiving a signal via the nervous system. These signals are controlled by neurotransmitters, which act similarly to natural neurotoxins. Perhaps this indicates a hidden use for Medicine's ability to manipulate poison.

Character Analysis

Medicine Melancholy (Medical Automaton) was released on June 23rd 2023 on Prayer “Medical Automaton Ultra Festival".

We all know how toxic this doll youkai is (at least when it comes to her powers), and we are all probably aware of her resentment towards humans, but it seems this variant of her is some kind of cyborg, with all kinds of nifty machinery to work with, seemingly used for medical procedures and keeping everyone healthy. Who knows if it was a certain Skilled Droid Engineer that was able to bring out the best of this iteration of Medicine Melancholy through a multitude of enhancements? Whatever was done that led to Medicine being the way she is right here, she does seem to be gradually overcoming her fear of humans, and her mastery of medical machinery may be realized in the future!

B5 Medicine Melancholy is a Heal-Class Friend with a sky-high HP Stat, solid anomaly utility, and a good chunk of Metal breaks.

As a Healer

  • By far the highest HP Stat in the game, coming in at 10000.
  • Heals the team’s HP via Skills 1 and 3 as well as her Last Word (35%, 45% and 80% respectively). With the percentage of team HP healed depending on B5 Medicine’s HP, her HP being as high as it is means most other friends can easily reach full HP from a Skill alone.
  • Heals any anomalies inflicted onto the team via Skill 1 or Last Word Post-ATK
  • Removes any Binds/Stat Debuffs on the team through Skill 3 and Spell Card 1, and via Passive 3, will always remove a Bind/Stat Debuff on herself every turn.
  • As per her Ability, any layer of Poison inflicted onto herself restores her HP by 5%. B5 Medicine can already do this on herself via her Skill 2.
  • Adds a Barrier to the team through Skill 1 and Spell Card 2.

As an Attacker / Supporter

  • Increases the team’s Yang ATK by 4 Stages with Skill 3, and can increase her own when Boosting, or through her Last Word Bullet Line.
  • Increases the team’s Accuracy whenever she Grazes.
  • Killer range includes Human, Kaiju, Lunar Capital, Beast, Insect and Flower.

As a Debuffer / Utility

  • Debuffs an enemy’s Yang DEF and CRIT DEF through her Last Word’s Pre-ATK.
  • Other miscellaneous debuffs are performed, such as CRIT Evasion on all enemies via Spell Card 1, Yang ATK on all enemies via Spell Card 2, and Agility on some bullet lines.
  • Lots of Poison anomalies inflicted onto her enemies: Skill 2, Spell Card 1 and Spell Card 2.
  • If inflicted with Burn or Paralyze, she can gain 0.20 Spirit Power as per her Ability.
  • Takes 35% less damage from Metal elements.

Story Card Recommendations

(Card recommendations last updated on June 22, 2023)

Spell Card

B5 Medicine will want those Spirit Power cards, although if you want to use it to benefit the team instead, that works well too. She doesn’t have natural CRIT ATK buffs, and with Accuracy only gained via Grazing, maybe you might want more of that too. Lastly, if you care about damage with these Spell Cards, that is also an option, but make sure the above is accounted for.

Spirit Power UP: The Witch of Scarlet Dreams, Our Dream, Dancer in the Puddle, Mountain of Faith, Youkai Mountain Anniversary, Taking a Breather in Spring, Post-Training Kinako Milk, Frozen-Over Gensokyo

Team Spirit Power UP: Myouren Temple Anniversary, Divine Spirit Tajikarao, Dancers Take the Stage, Utopia Tea Time

CRIT ATK UP: Worlds in Hand, Divine Spirit Tajikarao, New Year’s Shrine Visit VI, Miracle Mallet, Bloody Order

Accuracy UP: Ability Cards?, Taking a Breather in Spring, Valued Tools of the Trade, The Lunar War, Poltergeist Sisters’ Concert, 8th Hakurei Shrine Fall Reitaisai, Shichi-Go-San School Visit?!

Liquid Bullet Power UP: Resort Stars, Beach Sanshoku Geidontei, Frozen-Over Gensokyo

Heavy Bullet Power UP: The Secret God of the Sky, Summer God Fantasy Sea

Last Word

Her Last Word is both Full Slash and Full Metal, meaning no card is more perfect for B5 Medicine than Disillusion, which has a 50% Metal boost and a 45% Slash Boost. Other great alternatives for her that do the job well include Mysterious Sword Master and The Moon and Izayoi with their own 50% Slash effects. Any other options that boost Metal or Slash can work too should these options above not be available.

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

First up will be Memory Water. All those Poison anomalies will be enhanced, but more importantly, so will that all-important Spirit Power gain for B5 Medicine. Next up is Trepanning. That team-wide Yang ATK going from 2 stages to 4 stages is huge, and definitely worth taking advantage of. Last of them is more trivial, but Swallowing Aid Jelly’s mainly going to be reducing the cooldown from 4 turns to 3 instead. The HP healing does go up a bit, and if you’re not a fan of that little bit of RNG (in this case, anomaly healing), it’s possible one may not even consider leveling up this Skill for the time being, but we know Ultra Festival Units have been prone to that Fantasy Rebirth treatment…

Character Strengths

H-H-High Healing

B5 Medicine’s high HP being at 10000 (the highest in the game as of her release) means her team will be able to recover their HP very easily via 2 of her Skills. Since the amount of HP healed for the team is dependent on the healer’s HP (in this case, B5 Medicine), in most cases, anyone with considerably lower HP will easily be sure to have full HP again. She also heals anomalies on her team (be careful if they are ones the team benefits from) as well as the team’s Binds/Stat debuffs via Skill 3 and Spell Card 1 in addition to Passive 3 healing her own ones every turn.

Good Chunk of Metal Breaks

With 6 Metal breaks on her Last word and both Spell Cards having 3 layers of Metal, B5 Medicine isn’t bad at all when it comes to this element.

Character Weaknesses

General Breaking Aside from Metal is Lackluster

While the aforementioned Metal breaks are solid, other elements being scattered in her Shots and Spell Cards as well as only being able to break Poison anomalies outside of All-Targeting Focus Shot and Solo-Targeting Last Word really can be a hindrance. You could use all those Poison breaks to further weaken a conventional enemy’s Yang stats for damage output, but that leads us to our other downside…

S-S-Struggles with Damage

A mix of Yin and Yang in her kit hurts B5 Medicine a lot, especially in her Last Word. Despite the Specular Bullets on the Yin lines, her Yang ATK at 1825 compared with her Yin ATK at 825 is a drastic difference, and it leaves you wondering what could have been if her Last Word was purely Yang. That aside, the Yang DEF and CRIT DEF debuff on an enemy is huge, and if her Killers land (mainly Human, Lunar Capital and Capital on Line 1), you can still get a good outcome here.
