The Hakurei Shrine Maiden
Supposedly, Reimu is the 13th Hakurei shrine maiden. It's said that Gensokyo came into being roughly 1,000 years ago, but Hakurei Shrine has existed since before then. Assuming the shrine maidens of the past had long life spans, the line of Hakurei shrine maidens could be unbroken, with the title being passed down the generations of a singular family. However, there is a record of Aya Shameimaru making a comment that implies this might not be the case.
Regardless, there's also a chance the shrine was under the care of someone other than a shrine maiden for a generation―maybe a priest. As of right now, however, there's no historical record to suggest that.
Perhaps Mizuchi Miyadeguchi knows more about all of this.

The Inheritor of the Yin-Yang Orbs
Reimu Hakurei is the inheritor of the Yin-Yang Orbs, and it's said that only those of the Hakurei clan bloodline can use the orbs. They are used to exterminate youkai, and Reimu is known to carry them with her whenever she sets out to resolve an incident.
Misumaru Tamatsukuri claims to be the one who created the Yin-Yang Orbs, so it's possible she's familiar with the Hakurei clan's history. If the Hakurei shrine maiden is a hereditary title, it begs to reason that the orbs have been passed down with it. Assuming that's true, the earliest members of the Hakurei clan may have been brave youkai-exterminating humans in the time before Gensokyo was established. Then, after it was established, they would have moved to Gensokyo with the aim of controlling the youkai. From then on, they would have fought against the youkai every night until, eventually, they were trapped in Gensokyo along with the youkai when the barrier was formed.
The Yin-Yang Orbs continuously absorb their user's power, and when enough has accumulated, they release that power in an instant, whereupon the cycle starts again. It's rumored that the orbs are so powerful that if they were to fall into the wrong hands, they could destroy the entire world... but the origins of this rumor are unknown.
Similar to the Yin-Yang Orbs, the dragon gems are also Izanagi Objects, and they have the trait of replicating their user's ability, giving some credit to the aforementioned rumor. On the other hand, the orbs also display many similarities to the Miracle Mallet, an oni item. Furthermore, the orbs strongly resemble wheel-like creatures that have been sighted within the borders of Gensokyo, but it's unclear what connection, if any, they have with the orbs.

Hakurei Shrine's Enshrined God
The Yin-Yang Orbs are supposedly the Hakurei Shrine's shintai (a vessel for the enshrined god). However, since it's unclear what type of god the enshrined god is, the true form of the Yin-Yang Orbs is unknown. It's said the enshrined god struggles due to the lack of faith in them and that their standing among other gods has plummeted to the point that their opinions are ignored at meetings of the Yaoyorozu no Kami. Which is all to say, Hakurei Shrine truly lacks visitors.
However, while Reimu knows enough to allow Hakurei Shrine to fulfill its role of maintaining the barrier between Gensokyo and the outside world, she supposedly doesn't think the identity of the enshrined god is important. In other words, so long as the shrine is functioning, she couldn't care less who the god was.
She may sound cold, but with Reimu being a shrine maiden, nothing can be done to fix her personality. Even the enshrined god will simply have to accept her for who she is and go about their business.

The Borders of Gensokyo
The Great Hakurei Barrier is the most well-known barrier in Gensokyo, but it's far from the only one. The others, such as the barrier between illusions and reality, also help separate Gensokyo from other worlds. There are clear restrictions for who or what can pass through certain barriers. For example, the souls of the dead can pass through to Higan, and items lost in the human world can pass through to Gensokyo. However, these restrictions can be bypassed by a few select individuals.
It's said Hakurei Shrine was built on the border of Gensokyo and the outside world, but supposedly, it's more like the Hakurei Shrine of Gensokyo and the Hakurei Shrine of the outside world are located in the exact same spot. Reimu lives in the Gensokyo Hakurei Shrine, and despite her inability to gather faith, with her living there, the shrine is able to function. The outside world Hakurei Shrine, on the other hand, is said to be empty and desolate. However, according to Rinnosuke Morichika's records, he saw the outside world shrine bustling with people who seemed to be celebrating some kind of festival. But he still hasn't been able to verify whether the things he saw were real or an illusion...
Reimu does sometimes find unexpected, mysterious offerings in Gensokyo's Hakurei Shrine. Assuming those offerings have drifted in from the outside world, then perhaps its Hakurei Shrine isn't completely empty...

Reimu and Marisa
Any description of Reimu necessitates some mention of Marisa. Marisa recognizes both Reimu's innate genius and laziness, while simultaneously claiming that she herself is well suited to research. In much this way, the pairs' approaches to the goings-on of Gensokyo are often at odds. They are like Yin and Yang, coming together to cover their respective shortcomings.
The red and white of Reimu's outfit represent ''existence'' and ''nothingness,'' with the boundary between them representing the ''Beginning.'' On the other hand, the black and white of Marisa's outfit represent ''emptiness'' and ''nothingness,'' with their boundary representing the ''End.'' Reimu and Marisa's respective qualities can only be recognized while both of them exist. Furthermore, their qualities function just like the small part of Yang in Yin and the small part of Yin in Yang. Whether or not Reimu and Marisa are aware of this is unclear.

Character Analysis
Reimu Hakurei (Karma Speed) was released on January 18th 2024 on "Relic Prayer: Chasing Dreams." For more up-to-date analysis, be sure to visit the Official Discord Server.
What goes around comes around, and this applies to the Hakurei Shrine Maiden’s spherical weapons; the Yin-Yang Orbs. Reimu Hakurei is notorious for her involvement in the resolution of various incidents, from the Scarlet Mist to those dubious Ability Cards, you can be sure to see the Shrine Maiden in Red and White to put a stop to them, looking to add the Lost Word Incident to that list! However, when there is a shrine maiden, there is also an ordinary magician, and despite being pulled apart thanks to the Lost Word incident, you can count on both of them to never give up!
L80 Reimu Hakurei is a Speed-Class Friend who runs the roost with her stackable Accuracy and Agility buffs for the team, 222% Slice Scaling on her Last Word, a strong Killer range and anomaly mastery.
As an Attacker / Supporter / Debuffer
- Huge Yang ATK and Agility stats at 1900 and 1690 respectively.
- Grants herself Spirit Power on Skill 3 (2.00) and can gain Spirit Power from her Passive 2 (0.30). Also, both Spell Cards’ Post-ATKs give Spirit Power to the team (0.85), and thanks to her Ability, can gain even more Spirit Power to her when inflicted with certain anomalies.
- Yang ATK buff in a Focus Shot bullet line.
- Yang DEF debuffs against enemies through Skill 2, Spell Card 1 Pre-ATK, Spell Card 2’s first bullet line and through Last Word’s Pre-ATK.
- Yin DEF debuff on Spell Card 2’s first bullet line. This same bullet line (and some others on the attack) also comes with a Specular bullet, hitting the enemy’s Yin DEF.
- CRIT ATK buff for the team via Last Word Pre-ATK.
- CRIT DEF debuffs via Pre-ATKs from Spell Card 2 and Last Word, as well as few from Focus Shot’s bullet lines.
- Huge amount of Accuracy buffs for the team thanks to Skill 1 and Spell Card 1’s Pre-ATK.
- Huge amount of Agility buffs for the team thanks to Skill 1, Grazing via Agility and Last Word Pre-ATK. Also gains individual Agility buffs via some Spread Shot bullet lines.
- With Skill 1 having a 1 turn cooldown and this effect lasting 2 turns, the Accuracy and Agility buffs above can be stacked to the max!
- Yang DEF buffs for the team via Skill 2, alongside individual Yang DEF buffs on various bullet lines.
- Agility II buff via Last Word Pre-ATK.
- Has both Slice and Hard Scaling with more emphasis on the former. Goes from 111% Slice Scaling on Spell Cards to 222% on her Last Word, with Hard Scaling appearing for the occasional 111% Scaling.
- Gives the team 2 Barriers through either Skill 2 and Spell Card 1.
- L80 Reimu’s main Killers are Parallel Presence, Mastermind (LW), Human, God and Youkai. Other location-themed Killers representing previous incidents are scattered in her lines including: Scarlet Devil Mansion, Hakugyokurou, Eientei, Moriya Shrine, Palace of the Earth Spirits, Myouren Temple, Divine Spirit Mausoleum, Shining Needle Castle, Hell, Moon Enemy, Land of the Back Door, Animal Realm and Youkai Mountain!
As a Utility / Breaker
- Has several different elements, but L80 Reimu’s main ones are Sun and Star. Sun appears mainly on her Last Word and Spell Card 1 (3 and 4 times respectively), with Star appearing in her Last Word and Spell Card 2 (both 3 times). Other scattered elements include Fire, Wood and Earth.
- Gains benefits from anomalies inflicted on herself, such as 1 stage of Yang ATK, Yin ATK, CRIT ATK and CRIT Accuracy per Poison anomaly inflicted on her. L80 Reimu can keep this up herself with Skill 1’s Poison infliction to the team and even with a Spread Shot bullet line for herself. Meanwhile, any Blind and Burn inflictions will increase her Spirit Power by 0.20 per anomaly, which L80 Reimu does herself via various bullet lines in her kit.
- Can also inflict Burn anomalies onto enemies with Skill 3 and Spell Card 2’s Pre-ATK. Any Burn anomalies on enemies can be broken via Solo-Targeting Focus Shot (1P), All-Targeting Spell Card 2 (2P) and her All-Targeting Last Word (3P).
- Has Specular on her Yang bullet lines of Spell Card 2. With these targeting the enemy’s Yin DEF, in addition to Burn anomalies potentially inflicted could work to L80 Reimu’s advantage, even without anomaly breaking.
- Spell Card 1 has a 100% Stun rate on an enemy with its last bullet line at 3P).
- Through her Ability, L80 Reimu takes 35% less damage from both resisted and effective elements. The elements in question include Moon, Water, Metal and Star.
- Evasion buffs for the team via Spell Card 1’s Pre-ATK.
- Grants the team an Evasion II buff via Skill 3.
Story Card Recommendations
(Card recommendations last updated on February 14, 2024)
Spell Card
The main things that L80 Reimu will benefit from here would have to be Yang ATK, CRIT ATK and even more Spirit Power wouldn’t hurt. Agility and Accuracy can probably be put to one side due to how easy it is to grant to the team, so unless you need more Spirit Power which is still valid, you can then look to pure damage on Spell Cards. For Spell Card 1, it would be ones that either boost Sun elements or Heavy bullets, and for Spell Card 2, that would be Star elements or Laser bullets.

Endless Summer Maiden
Touhou LostWord
It’s no surprise, but naturally L80 Reimu’s best Story Card for her Last Word would be her very own Karma Speed, for those 50% boosts in Sun and Ofuda, benefiting lines 1, 3 and 5! For just the Ofuda boosts, we have both Shrine Maiden Reborn and Summer God, Fantasy Sea, with another 50% Sun option being Makai God’s Descent. For some niche and situational options, you have Endless Summer Maiden and Touhou LostWord, the latter being perfect for beginners.
Character Skill Level Up Recommendations
To get to 3.00 Spirit Power from the get-go, Skill 3’s East Wind shall be first up, also inflicting an extra layer of Burn on all enemies. Next up is the first one that is Parallel World Link which will greatly reduce the cooldown from 4 Turns to 1 Turn, allowing that beneficial stacking of Agility and Accuracy for the team, as well as another Layer of Poison inflicted. Finally, we have the one in the middle, Prayer Granting. Slightly increasing the impact of each aspect of it by 1, whether it be the cooldown from 5 to 4 Turns, the Barriers for the team from 1 to 2, the team Yang DEF from 2 to 3 Stages and the enemy’s Yang DEF debuff also by 2 to 3 stages.
Character Strengths
Speedy and Strong Youkai Exterminator
L80 Reimu has just about all the important stuff one could need for a Friend capable of pure damage against her targets. Strong range of Killers, massive Slice Scaling going up to 222% to go with a high Agility stat of 1690 (which can be maxed out easily, but more on that later), Agility II buffing on her Last Word Pre-ATK, Hard Scaling is also snuck in with some ways to slightly gain Yang DEF, Spirit Power constantly flowing in with her Passive 2 and Skill 3, using self-inflicted Poison anomalies every turn for offensive buffs, and self-inflicted Burn anomalies on bullet lines to add to her already strong Spirit Power gaining potential (Blind anomalies are also possible too). When it comes to raw damage, L80 Reimu uses almost any avenue possible to ramp up her power, and to great success at that! Should be more than enough to exterminate those in her path…
Fantasy-Like Support
The main reason why L80 Reimu’s Agility is so easy to max out, and this extends to her Accuracy too, is because of that satisfying Skill 1! With it being usable every turn, the Accuracy and Agility buffs lasting 2 Turns and those buffs also being provided to the team, anyone who benefits from Slice Scaling or would like help with Accuracy will absolutely benefit from this Skill! But it doesn’t end there, because L80 Reimu can share her Spirit Power boosting with her teammates through both Spell Card Post-ATKs. To a lesser extent, Skill 2 can also boost the team’s Yang DEF and if it counts as a form of support, L80 Reimu can even look to debuffing which can still be of use to allies, whether it be Yang DEF, or CRIT DEF (as well as a Yin DEF debuff to a very minor extent).
Shrine Maiden of Survivability
As somewhat of a callback to her L1 self, there are parts of L80 Reimu’s kit that may remind you of those survivability moments. A most notable example would be her ways of granting 2 Barriers to the team with Skill 2 and Spell Card 1, as well as L80 Reimu also taking 35% less damage from both effective and resisted elements. But it’s not just about tanking, since another way for L80 Reimu to require 1 less Graze for whatever reason, she could resort to her Spell Card 1 against a single enemy at 3P. Another way for L80 Reimu to survive would be with her rather solid Burn breaking potential, using her mix of Skill 3 and Spell Card 2 to rack up Burn breaks, stopping the enemies in their tracks.
Character Weaknesses
Needs a Jumpstart in Yang ATK Buffs
L80 Reimu’s only way of gaining Yang ATK is through her Skill 1, granting herself 2 Poison anomalies of both Yang ATK and CRIT ATK which she desperately needs, especially the former. While her Last Word gives her team CRIT ATK, and the various Yang DEF and CRIT DEF debuffs L80 Reimu has could mitigate this, it’s just a case of needing extra support to keep her Yang ATK and even CRIT ATK up and running.
