Overview

Mega Heracross is a powerhouse Pokemon that hits like a truck and has at least decent defense, meaning this should be a hard raid, right? Two words: Mega Rayquaza. Mega Heracross has a very unfortunate double-weakness to Flying Type attacks, meaning some of the absolute strongest things in the game are able to absolutely annihilate it in no time, to the point where Mega Rayquaza alone can potentially solo it by being the only Pokemon on the team and simply re-joining once it faints. The one caveat to this is Rock Blast, which is an extremely threatening attack to face for pretty much all of its top counters.

Approach

Team composition

  • Mega Heracross is weak to Fairy, Psychic, and Fire.... but it's also double-weak to Flying, meaning all other weaknesses barely even register.

Dodging

Mega Heracross doesn't put up much of a fight due to the near-comprehensive resistances that the majority of its counters sport. Still, dodging Megahorn, or Close Combat can greatly increase a given Pokemon's longevity. Earthquake can be easily dodged too, but the double-resistance that most counters have to Ground means it might not be worth the time it takes to dodge unless you're great with your timing. The one exceptional move to watch out for is Rock Blast, but it comes out so frequently that it may not be worth dodging most of the time despite its high damage output.

Best Raid Boss Counters

Supreme Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Rayquaza Mega Rayquaza
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Rayquaza makes this raid a breeze, to the point where it's entirely possible to solo Mega Heracross by just bringing Mega Rayquaza and re-entering after fainting. It's legitimately hard to overstate just how amazing this Pokemon is, and just how hard it counters just about everything that Mega Heracross can throw at it.

  • Strengths: Counter, Struggle Bug, Megahorn, Close Combat, Earthquake (2x)
  • Weaknesses: Rock Blast

Good Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Pidgeot Mega Pidgeot
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Pidgeot doesn't actually resist Fighting Type moves despite its Flying typing, but it's still a good silver-medal option for a Flying Type Mega Evolution... a very distant silver medal.

  • Strengths: Struggle Bug, Megahorn, Earthquake (2x)
  • Weaknesses: Rock Blast
Mega Charizard Y Mega Charizard Y
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

If only Mega Charizard Y had a Flying Type Charged Move, it could be genuinely great. But as-is it falls off. Still, the double-resistance to Bug Type moves is helpful, though the double weakness to Rock Blast hurts.

  • Strengths: Counter, Struggle Bug (2x), Megahorn (2x), Close Combat, Earthquake
  • Weaknesses: Rock Blast (2x)
Mega Blaziken Mega Blaziken
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

In the reverse case from Mega Charizard Y, Mega Blaziken has a Flying Type Charged Move, but no Flying Type Fast Move... and no Flying Type STAB. Also; don't TM away Blast Burn for Brave Bird.

  • Strengths: Struggle Bug (2x), Megahorn (2x),
  • Weaknesses: Earthquake
Mega Alakazam Mega Alakazam
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

If you're going for Psychic, then Mega Alakazam works... but not very well.

  • Strengths: Counter, Close Combat
  • Weaknesses: Struggle Bug, Megahorn
Mega Gardevoir Mega Gardevoir
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Meg Gardevoir is pretty far behind anything sporting a Flying Type move, but it's still an okay option that doesn't have any weaknesses to anything that Mega Heracross can throw at it.

  • Strengths: Counter (2x), Close Combat (2x)
  • Weaknesses: None
Mega Latios Mega Latios
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating
  • Strengths: Counter, Close Combat
  • Weaknesses: Struggle Bug, Megahorn

Supreme Counters

Rayquaza Rayquaza
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Rayquaza has the absolute, undisputed best performance among the non-Mega options on this list. It hits like a truck and lasts for a very long time, making it the top pick for raid teams.

  • Strengths: Counter, Struggle Bug, Megahorn, Close Combat, Earthquake (2x), Rock Blast
  • Weaknesses:
ShadowMoltres Shadow Moltres
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Moltres doesn't like Rock Blast at all, but it can trash Mega Heracross on just about every other level.

  • Strengths: Counter, Struggle Bug (2x), Megahorn (2x), Close Combat, Earthquake
  • Weaknesses: Rock Blast (2x)
Shadow-Staraptor Shadow Staraptor
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating
Gust Fly Best

Shadow Staraptor hits hard, but it tends to not last for an extremely long time.

  • Strengths: Struggle Bug, Megahorn, Earthquake (2x)
  • Weaknesses: Rock Blast
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Dark is a bad sub-typing for this raid, as it negates Flying Type's weaknesses to Bug and Fighting alike. However, the Pokemon of death still has a surprisingly high TDO in this raid, relatively speaking.

  • Strengths: Earthquake (2x)
  • Weaknesses: Rock Blast
Shadow-Honchkrow Shadow Honchkrow
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The same basic story as Yveltal, but a bit more DPS and a lot less TDO.

  • Strengths: Earthquake (2x)
  • Weaknesses: Rock Blast

Good Counters

shadow_unfezant Shadow Unfezant
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Despite being basically a regional Pidgey evolution, Shadow Unfezant still has great performance.

  • Strengths: Struggle Bug, Megahorn, Earthquake (2x)
  • Weaknesses: Rock Blast
Enamorus Enamorus (Incarnate Forme)
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Enamorus lacks a Flying Type Fast Move, but Fairy Wind is still fine. Its Fairy typing also gives it outstanding potential TDO in this raid, sporting a 2x resistance to everything that Mega Heracross can throw at it save Rock Blast.

  • Strengths: Counter (2x), Struggle Bug (2x), Megahorn (2x), Close Combat (2x), Earthquake (2x)
  • Weaknesses: Rock Blast
Shadow-Ho-oh Shadow Ho-Oh
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Ho-oh pretty much needs Hidden Power Flying to be genuinely good, though it can still work given Fire or Psychic... and Hidden Power Fairy doesn't exist.

  • Strengths: Counter, Struggle Bug (2x), Megahorn (2x), Close Combat, Earthquake
  • Weaknesses: Rock Blast (2x)
