Kouten
Expand
Kouten (a Touhou LW original) refers to clear weather that's perfect for a day out. This is an apt temperament for this Chen, who is a nekomata shikigami. She's endowed with Fire Phase since she's full of energy and Star Essence since she hasn't yet reached her full potential.

The formless and passionate Fire Phase resists Wood Phase, because wood feeds fire, but it is weak to Water Phase, because water dampens fire.

The diverse and uncooperative Star Essence resists the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence, but it is weak to the charming and arrogant Sun Essence.

Character Shots

The Spread Shot of Chen from the world with a never-ending winter (a Touhou LW original). She casts a spell by walking in a special manner. The notion that magic can be used by walking in certain ways stems from China. Spirit energy flows beneath the Earth and by stepping on the ground, you can influence that flow, allowing you to ward off evil spirits and ease the passing of deceased souls. Chen is a cat, so it seems she's adept at casting spells with her walk. It's said that henbai movement patterns are used in sarugaku, a type of Japanese theater.

The Focus Shot of Chen from the world with a never-ending winter (a Touhou LW original). She uses an ancient magic ritual in this attack. Yin, yang, and the five phases are the foundation of shikigami magic. However, this world's Chen is more skilled at using her beast youkai body to perform acrobatic youjutsu. Or at least, that's what she thinks. Regardless, Ran would likely prefer Chen to use shikigami magic, even if that proves more difficult...

A Spell Card of Chen from the world with a never-ending winter. She uses an ancient form of divination in this attack. It's said to perform kimontonkou, you require a tonkouban. However, it doesn't seem like Chen owns one, so perhaps she makes up for that by using her powers as a shikigami. A tonkouban is similar to a dial or meter, so she probably created a mathematical simulation. All that to say, kimontonkou is an extremely fitting technique for a shikigami to use.

A Spell Card of Chen from the world with a never-ending winter. She borrows Bishamonten's power in this attack. Bishamonten is the ruler of the yakshas and rakshasas. There's a theory stating well-known types of youkai, such as tengu, kappa, and oni, partly originated from yakshas and rakshasas. Bishamonten is powerful enough to rule over both, and he was likely depended on as a guardian deity by those who trained in the mountains. The place where Chen resides, Mayohiga, is probably on the Youkai Mountain, so maybe this attack is necessary for her to live in peace.

The Last Word of Chen from the world with a never-ending winter (a Touhou LW original). Chen commands twelve shikigami in her own unique way. Many inhabitants of this Chen's world have been strongly influenced by flowers or snow, perhaps because of the incident's prolonging. However, Chen is unique even among those unaffected. Her temperament has remained relatively balanced, which may be due to her frequently traveling between the Netherworld and the world of the living. Moreover, as a result of her maintaining balance between the Five Phases, it appears she's now able to use shikigami techniques far beyond her original capabilities. It's said to become a shikigami, you must be a beast youkai, and this world's Chen has a Last Word that allows her to temporarily command twelve of them. Perhaps she's on the way to becoming a powerful, fully-fledged shikigami user...

Character Ability

Mainly capable of using youjutsu
Expand
The ability of Chen from the world with a never-ending winter (a Touhou LW original). It is essentially the same as our version of Chen's ability.

Hieda no Akyuu wrote about the Spring Snow Incident in her book, detailing how Gensokyo's winter lingered as a result of spring being stolen and taken to the Netherworld. It seems the incident became prolonged in this Chen's world, which has yet to welcome another spring. The incident was instigated by Yuyuko Saigyouji, with Youmu Konpaku doing most of the actual work. As ever, Yukari Yakumo likely knew about the incident before it began, and her shikigami, Ran, may well have known some details too. Whether Ran's shikigami, Chen, had any clue what was to come... is unclear.

The incident in her world may have been prolonged, but this Chen hasn't gotten any smarter. She still launches bullets at Reimu and the others whenever they approach Mayohiga and visits the Netherworld to perform work for Ran as her shikigami. She's always in a fluster, crossing the border between the living and the dead, but is yet to understand what's truly going on. However, thanks to her frequent movement, she hasn't frozen in the cold or succumbed to the pleasant warmth and is as mentally stable as ever. Given more time (or some more fitting instruction from her masters), she may have learned to perform her tasks as a shikigami with lightning speed and with astonishing accuracy. However, it's not like this Chen hasn't improved at all. By imitating Ran's shikigami techniques and practicing over and over again, she's reached a similar level to her master. Of course, Chen's still better at her acrobatic youjutsu imitation.

Then again, in the outside world, beings similar to shikigami are often praised but aren't able to think for themselves. Despite that, it's said they're capable of learning things and acquiring new skills. It's fully possible to reach the level of a master, even if you start by simply copying another. Perhaps imitation is just another word for acquisition. This brings into question the blurred distinction between what is real and what is fake. Never underestimate a copycat.

Character Analysis

Chen (Cherry Blossom) was released on September 1st 2023 on "Festival Prayer: Purrfect Bakeneko.” For more up-to-date analysis, be sure to visit the Discord Official Discord Server.

Living in a lost village known as Mayohiga is a bakeneko who just so happens to be the shikigami of a shikigami of a significant gap youkai, although the gap youkai is a rather sleepy one at that. On her own and greatly distanced from her shikigami, this bakeneko isn’t the strongest unfortunately, but when that distance is gone, she can claw away her foes much easier! But how will this version of Chen adapt to this strange world without knowing where to find a fluffy fox or dazzlingly beautiful lady close to her? Hopefully it won’t be a paw time for her, especially when it comes to water!

A7 Chen is a Technical-Class Friend who can gain Spirit Power rather frequently, has great CRIT ATK/CRIT DEF support and can actually hold her own decently well with the help of her low cooldown Skills.

As a Attacker

  • Can do 30% more damage if her bullets’ elements are resisted by any target(s). Available elements are Earth, Fire, Water, Metal and Wood.
  • All 3 Skills increase her Spirit Power by 0.60. Skill 3 grants it to the team too, as well as Spell Card 1’s Post-ATK granting 0.80 of it also to the team.
  • Yin ATK buffs gained via Spell Card 2 and Last Word Pre-ATKs.
  • Yin DEF debuffs on enemies via Skill 2 and on a few bullet lines.
  • CRIT ATK buffs when Grazing as well as team buffs via Skill 3 and Last Word Pre-ATK.
  • CRIT DEF debuffs against enemies through all Spell Card and Last Word Pre-ATKs as well as various bullet lines.
  • Some Accuracy buffs gained via bullet lines.
  • Takes advantage of Slice Scaling, with 2 Last Word bullet lines having 100% Scaling.
  • Killers include Shrine Maiden, Magician, Maid, Incident Resolver, Shikigami, Beast, Beast Youkai, Cat, Human and Youkai Mountain.

As a Utility

  • Freeze anomalies are inflicted against either 1 enemy or multiple enemies. Skill 2 inflicts 4 of them to an enemy, whereas Spell Card 1 Pre-ATK inflicts 2-3 of them to all enemies. These are broken via All-Targeting Spell Card 1 (3P), Solo-Targeting Spell Card 2 (2P) and her Last Word (3P).
  • Can also break Burn anomalies via Last Word (2P).
  • Benefits from Burn and Freeze anomalies inflicted on her by buffing her Agility, Accuracy and Evasion. Can inflict 2 Freeze anomalies to the whole party.
  • Can gain 2 Barriers after using her Spell Card 2.
  • Takes 30% less damage from humans via Passive 1.

Story Card Recommendations

(Card recommendations last updated on August 31, 2023)

Spell Card

A7 Chen will definitely need more Accuracy and Yin ATK buffs to really ensure her damage stays strong and sharp (as her claws), and on top of that, perhaps a little Spirit Power wouldn’t hurt too. Speaking of Sharp, if A7 Chen’s relevant buffs are covered, you can always look to buff her Spell Card power by putting in some Sharp Bullet boosting Cards. There is actually a perfect fit when it comes to her first Spell Card due to it being completely Wood and Sharp…

Last Word

A7 Chen’s Last Word is Body, making a card that boosts the power of Body bullets the purrfect pick for this slot. These cards include Incident Shrine, Stand-In Shrine Maiden, Beach Sanshoku Geidontei and Choose an Animal Spirit. There is also Eating Contest too since that boosts it by 45% if the rest aren’t available to you, but the big four of Body Bullet Boosters mentioned above are the recommended ones.

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

All of A7 Chen’s Skills not only have 0.60 Spirit Power to gain but also have their cooldowns reduced by 2 turns when going from Level 1 to Level 10. First up is Memory Cleanup. Despite the Freeze anomalies to the team being uncertain in terms of being a pro or con, the Party CRIT ATK buffs and Party Spirit Power are very much worthwhile here, finishing at a rather short 3 turns. Next up is Overclock, really piling up those Freeze anomalies inflicted on a specific target, while also weakening the Yin DEF of her enemies. Last up is Simple Procedure, which as the name suggests, is a simple skill compared to the rest, only having 0.60 Spirit Power, but can be used every other turn when leveled up!

Character Strengths

Generally Self-Sustainable

Whether it be her low cooldowns in her Skills as well as her consistent supply of Spirit Power as a result of it, or her decent mix of CRIT ATK buffs and CRIT DEF debuffs as well as even able to maintain any anomaly buffs on herself by being able to gain Barriers via a Spell Card, A7 Chen definitely has what it takes to survive and keep piling on both buffs and debuffs.

Surprisingly Decent in some Areas of Suppawt

Not only does A7 Chen have quick ways to gain Spirit Power, but both Skill 3 and Spell Card 1 grant the team 0.60 and 0.80 Spirit Power respectively! In addition, CRIT ATK buffs can even be be gained through Skill 3 as well as on her Last Word’s Pre-ATK, and in some cases, her debuffing potential in the form of Yin DEF and CRIT DEF debuffs, especially the latter, can definitely be taken advantage of rather well!

Character Weaknesses

Somewhat Awkward with Accuracy and Yin ATK Buffs

While technically A7 Chen does have her own Accuracy and Yin ATK buffs appearing in her kit, what makes it awkward is that her Accuracy buffs are either available via various bullet lines, or through her Ability to inflict herself with Freeze anomalies (via Skill 3) thus increasing her Accuracy. In terms of Yin ATK, she has them on Spell Card 2 and Last Word Pre-ATKs which make this a little more manageable, not to mention that additional Yin DEF debuff potential. Conveniently enough, a certain kitsune mistress that this bakeneko looks up Supports her greatly when it comes to making up for these buffs!
