Character Analysis
Renko Usami (Investigating a Makai God) was released on November 10th 2023 on Genic Prayer “Secret Makai God”.
The Genic Genesis has begun, and has introduced two separate paths. One of those being the path that brings together a human from the outside world and the God and Creator of Makai from a legacy era. This human is known as Renko Usami who is close friends with fellow Secret Sealing Club member, Maribel Hearn and has a knack for physics. Meanwhile, this God of Makai identified as Shinki is a notorious and benevolent being from the days of old who has now become one with this human being. But why and how? The plot thickens…
LR1 Renko Usami is an Attack-Class Friend who together with the Makai God known as Shinki, is capable of massive Spirit Power gain, great access to Sun and Water elemental breaks, mastery of Blind and Poison anomalies and reaps the benefits of their Resonance Skill 3, increasing the party’s Spirit Power and Damage for every Friend at the front guard.
As a Attacker / Supporter / Debuffer
- Massive Yang ATK Stat at 1977.
- With all of LR1 Renko and Shinki’s bullet lines either being Sun or Water, if any of those are effective against a specific enemy, its damage to effective elements increases by 40%.
- Thanks to the unique Resonance Skill 3, can grant the team 5% more Damage x the number of Friends at the front. Genic Units count as 2 Friends which makes this a minimum of a 10% increase.
- Has a lot of selfish Spirit Power buffs. Selfish buffs include Skill 2 (1.50), Passive 3 (0.35 every turn), Spell Card 1 Post-ATK (1.75) and Last Word Post-ATK (2.75).
- For party-wide Spirit Power buffs, they have Spell Card 2 Post-ATK (0.85) and the unique Resonance Skill 3 which gives 0.25 x the number of Friends at the front. Genic Units count as 2 Friends which makes this a minimum of 0.50.
- Grants Yang ATK buffs for the team through Boosting, Skill 3, Spell Card 2 Pre-ATK and Last Word Pre-ATK. Yang ATK buffs also appear on some bullet lines across her Focus Shot and Spell Card 1.
- Gains a Yang ATK II buff on her Last Word Pre-ATK.
- Debuffs the Yang DEF on her enemies through Spell Card 2 Pre-ATK as well as some bullet lines on Spread Shot and Spell Card 1.
- Gives the team buffs in Accuracy through Grazing, Skill 1 and Spell Card 1 Pre-ATK.
- CRIT ATK buff on Last Word Pre-ATK.
- Debuffs the CRIT DEF on her enemies via Skill 1.
- Gains Agility buffs through bullet lines on Spell Card 2 and Last Word. These can also be put toward Slice Scaling which also appears in her kit. Her Last Word’s Slice Scaling on lines 1-5 have a 198% scaling conversion in it.
- LR1 Renko’s Killer Range includes Human, Youkai, Soul, Makai, Lost Presence, Devil, Demonic Person, Shrine Maiden, Magician and Evil Spirit.
As a Utility / Barrier Breaker
- All bullet lines are either of the Sun or Water element, with her Spell Card 2 and Last Word being fully Sun and everything else being a mix of the 2 elements in question.
- LR1 Renko/Shinki benefits from when Poison and Blind anomalies are inflicted on herself. For every layer of either infliction, she gains a stage of Yin ATK, Yang ATK, CRIT ATK and CRIT Accuracy. This is achieved by self-inflicting Blind anomalies via Skill 1, and bullet lines for Spread Shot, Spell Card 1 and Spell Card 2. Self-inflicted Poison anomalies are achieved via Focus Shot bullet lines.
- Is able to inflict Blind anomalies on all enemies via Skill 2 (All), Last Word Pre-ATK (All), bullet lines on Spread Shot (All) and Spell Card 2 (Solo), as well as Poison anomalies on Spell Card 1 Pre-ATK (All) and Focus Shot bullet lines (All). All-Targeting Focus Shot breaks Blind (2P), All-Targeting Spell Card 1 breaks both Blind and Poison (Both 2P) and All-Targeting Last Word breaks Blind, Poison and Burn (All 3P).
- Grants 2 Barriers for self via Spell Card 2 Post-ATK.
- Takes 30% less damage from Gensokyo enemies when attacked via Passive 1.
- Last Word bullet line 4 has the Adhesive effect, causing Delay on all enemies.
Story Card Recommendations

Spell Card
In order to really solidify LR1 Renko and Shinki’s CRIT ATK power, it doesn’t hurt to provide a Story Card that benefits her in that department, whether it’s for herself or the whole team. If you want to strengthen her Slice Scaling a little further if for some reason you want more damage, cards that boost Agility can help with that too. Usually, Spirit Power cards would be recommended but given the abundance in Spirit Power here, that’s not as big of a priority, although it never hurts to have more of it. And finally, for pure damage, go with cards that boost Light Bullets for Spell Card 1 or Sun Elemental Bullets for Spell Card 2.

Without a shadow of a doubt, LR1 Renko and Shinki’s best Story Card for her Last Word is Makai God’s Descent. It’s made specifically for her after all, thanks to its 50% boost in Sun and Light on all 6 lines, creating a 100% boost across the board, with a slight Yang DEF debuff on top of it. Speaking of Sun and Light boosting, we also also have Behind the Bullets: Reimu which gives this Last Word a total boost of 55%. For other alternatives, we have Evil Spirit Possession, Reisen’s Moonlit Festival!, and Puppeteer and Necromancer for their 50% Light Boosts. Kaguya’s Moonlit Festival! and Silver Gale provide a 45% boost in it while Congress of Sages has a 40% Boost but with a strong Yin ATK stat stick.
Character Skill Level Up Recommendations
As tempting as a certain Resonance Skill is to go with first, let’s start with the one in the middle, Silent Observation. For that extra boost in Spirit Power to help ensure LR1 Renko and Shinki reach 3P right off the bat, while adding a little extra Blind anomaly infliction. Next up will be Makai Genesis. The Spirit Power effect stays the same no matter what, but the Damage effect doesn’t. Starting from 3% x the number of front guards and finishing at 5% in terms of its increase, it will help to get more out of this unique effect. Also comes with a slight Yang ATK buff. Last up is The Creator, and while these effects are solid, the difference between Level 1 and Level 10 is only 1 stage for each effect, so this isn’t a lot of pressure to get this Skill maxed out over the others.
Character Strengths
Legendary Illusion ~ Infinite Damage
LR1 Renko and Shinki have it all figured out when it comes to staying very true to their Attack Class. Potential 40% increase in damage if said target is weak to Sun or Water (preferably the former)? Check. Lots of Yang ATK via base stat total of 1977, Yang ATK buffs and Yang ATK II on top? Check. A solid range of Killers that can also be capitalized on with CRIT ATK buffs via self-anomaly inflictions and CRIT DEF debuffs? Check. A new Resonance Skill effect that further increases the team’s damage for every Friend on the frontline, with Genic = 2 Friends instead of 1? The same Resonance Skill effect having an immunity to Buff Removal on harder stages like VS Divergent Spirits? Check yet again! It’s ironic, but may also be no surprise how the Creator of Makai easily destroys her opponents with pure power!
Here Comes the Sun, and Anomalies
Not only is LR1 Renko and Shinki broken in damage, but they break the mold, and then some via easily breaking the barriers of her enemies by focusing on a lot of Sun and Water elements (mostly Sun) and can easily pile up the Blind and Poison anomaly inflictions on all her enemies (Blind anomalies via Skill 2, Poison anomalies via Spell Card 1 Pre-ATK), to set them up for breaking, like with her Focus Shot or Spell Card 1 at 2P. While the Water breaks are on the more modest side, that is because there is an incredible amount of Sun breaks to go around, like the All-Sun Spell Card 2 and Last Word.

To complement the above, whether it be damage or anomaly breaking, LR1 Renko and Shinki are always going to be stocked up on Spirit Power, whether it be selfish or given to the team. For the selfish side, we have Skill 2 (1.50), Spell Card 1 Post-ATK (1.75), Last Word Post-ATK (2.75), and Passive 3 (0.35 every turn). As for the supportive side, we have Spell Card 2’s Post-ATK (0.85 for the party) and Skill 3’s Resonance Effect pertaining to Spirit Power. Character Weaknesses
One-Time Resonance
As fantastic as Skill 3 is for its ability to ramp up the party’s damage and Spirit Power unlike those that came before in Touhou LostWord, one could see its 8 Turn cooldown duration as an unfortunate sting in its tail. With these crucial effects only lasting 2 turns and most likely only going to be used once per battle, you will definitely have to think more about how and when you use this Skill to get the most out of it, as the chances of waiting 8 turns to use it again in the same battle aren’t might be rather low.
