Karakkaze
Expand
Karakkaze (a Touhou LW original) refers to gusts of wind that cross atop the mountains down into the eastern regions of Japan. This is an apt temperament for Kanako, who commands the wind as a god.

Kanako's original temperament was Metal Phase (strong against Earth Phase but weak to Fire Phase) and Sun Essence (strong against Star Essence but weak to Moon Essence), but she has lost her sky god temperament (Metal Phase), and it has been replaced with wind god temperament (strong against Wood Phase).

Character Shots

The Spread Shot of Kanako Yasaka from the world of iron and steam (a Touhou LW original). She flies up into the sky and creates a big gust of wind. This attack pairs with Suwako's ''Lake of Great Earth.'' Cultures all over the world see the visage of their gods in the sky. In part, this is because wind, being an invisible force, was thought to be a manifestation of their power. The gods express their will through the wind to bring blessed rain and sunlight or cause devastating storms.

The Focus Shot of Kanako Yasaka from the world of iron and steam (a Touhou LW original). She swoops down from the sky, riding a log in the shape of a snake. This attack pairs with Suwako's ''Stone Frog God.'' There are many Japanese legends and folk stories that feature trees and snakes (and sometimes dragons) together, so much so that there is even a word, ''habaki,'' that means ''snakes and trees'' (or sometimes ''dragons and trees'' depending on how it is written). Nowadays, the Japanese word for ''snake'' is ''hebi,'' but they used to be called ''haba,'' like in Amenohabakiri (the sword wielded by the god Susanoo to slay the great dragon-serpent Orochi in Shinto mythology). It's also theorized that the enigmatic god, Arahabaki, was named after a great big tree that looks like a snake. Following this train of thought, it's possible that Hahakigi (a mysterious tree that looks like a broom standing on its end but disappears when you get close) and onbashira also have some kind of connection to snakes.

A Spell Card of Kanako Yasaka from the world of iron and steam. She deploys an ancient ring in this attack. There are two main types of ring-shaped objects used in Shintoism―chinowa, great rings of cogon grass that people pass through as part of a purification ritual, and shimenawa, thick ropes of rice straw or hemp. They both share the same religious significance. They are generally used to create boundaries or barriers with a clear inside and outside. However, they can also be used to erase boundaries because connecting the start and end of a rope together forms a ring that symbolizes eternity. In the far west, this idea is represented by the ouroboros, a symbol depicting a snake eating its own tail. Eternity is immortality, but it is also a near-inescapable prison. That is why shimenawa are used to tie up and restrain gods.

A Spell Card of Kanako Yasaka from the world of iron and steam. She kicks up a storm from the land of the gods. The concept of ''ten'' or ''tian'' in Chinese (generally translated as Heaven) is often thought of as synonymous with the sky, but there are some key differences between them. ''Ten'' refers to the celestial canopy, a dome around the earth that acts as the boundary of the universe. Celestial objects, such as the Sun, the Moon, and stars, follow fixed paths along this dome. On the other hand, the sky refers to the visibly empty space between Heaven and Earth. While it appears empty, it is, in fact, full of an invisible magic power (pure wind) that swirls around and propels celestial objects. Thus, controlling this wind is a form of celestial wizardry.

The Last Word of Kanako Yasaka from the world of iron and steam (a Touhou LW original). She teaches an ancient art of ironmaking, where iron is extracted from ore through gravity separation. The wind brings rain, rain forms rivers, and rivers erode mountains, washing away the earth. The earth contains ore, and ore combined with fire produces metal. Metal is a gift from the gods realized through the Five Phases, starting with wind. It has long been known that wind is needed to light a fire and to make it hotter, but nowadays, wind is also known as a type of renewable energy. Metal (especially iron) and energy are the foundations of human civilization, but they are also the core foundations of this planet. This planet is essentially a colossal ironworks.

Character Ability

Capable of creating heavenliness (Berserk)
Expand
The ability of Kanako Yasaka from the world of iron and steam (a Touhou LW original). Those who reside in the world where mountain resources are converted to power have formed their own unique civilization. Kanako's ability doesn't appear to have changed much, but she seems to have used it extensively to establish the civilization she's a part of.

This world's Kanako and Suwako are gods of ironmaking, more so than they are in other worlds. It's often overlooked, but the Great Suwa War is said to have been a war between two different ironmaking techniques. The legend is probably based on a true historical event, where people of the Izumo region equipped with advanced iron and steel-making technology invaded Suwa, a land where people still relied on primitive ironmaking techniques. It isn't known whether this world's Kanako and Suwako experienced a Great Suwa War, but it can be assumed that their bond of friendship was forged following an event of similar proportions. Also, it is unclear whether they were always small or if some event caused them to shrink. Either way, their powers as gods don't seem to have declined as a result.

It is sometimes thought that the Iron Age was a small step in the cultural advancement of humankind. However, this view neglects to consider that all our modern-day cities are literally held together by steel. You could also argue that every type of machine is a product of iron smelting technology, as that technology birthed metallurgical techniques for countless other metals and alloys. Taking this one step further, you could say that our entire civilization is reliant on the mining and processing of the various ores found in mountains. Most of the world runs off fossil fuels or nuclear fission, but this energy can only be harnessed thanks to durable metal structures capable of withstanding high heat and pressure. In other words, our modern-day civilization can be thought of as an extension of the Iron Age or even perhaps its final form.

Wind carries water to the mountains, and it also causes mountain fires. Metal is produced by washing the earth with water and heating it with fire. From metal, we get powerful machines and intricate computers that our civilization couldn't function without. Metal is a blessing from the gods, with the different metals being like stars that sparkle underground. This is why Qian of the Eight Trigrams means Heaven and corresponds with the Metal Phase. In terms of family, Qian is the father, and it is associated with tenacity and strength in business and battle. It's possible that the ''kana'' in Kanako's name comes from ''kanna,'' the Japanese word for the iron ore pits used to extract iron sand, or ''kane,'' the Japanese word for metal.

Character Analysis

Kanako Yasaka (Moriya’s Official Tiny God) was released on March 1st 2024 on Prayer “Smol God of Steel and Storms Ultra Festival”.  For more up-to-date analysis, be sure to visit the Discord Official Discord Server.

They say that big things come in small packages, and that very much applies to this version of Kanako Yasaka! This relatively small version of the Moriya Shrine God from a world of iron and steam exuberates many similar qualities to other versions of herself, but seems to be a little more prone to the waterworks which is understandable! However, she not only hopes to do her part in this multiversal incident, but also form nerves of steel, hopefully as steely as the realm she originates from!

W2 Kanako Yasaka is a Support-Class Friend who keeps the faith for her team by providing them buffs in Yang ATK, Yang DEF, CRIT ATK, Spirit Power, Barriers and Accuracy, as well as coming with a large amount of Spirit Power gain potential and Wood breaks.

As an Attacker / Supporter

  • Solid Yang ATK stat at 1900.
  • Strong Spirit Power boosting for both herself and the team. For the team, that includes Skill 3 (1.00) and Spell Card 1 Post-ATK (0.95). As for herself, she gains more via Skill 1 (1.50) and through her Ability to gain 0.20 Spirit Power when inflicted with Freeze/Paralyze anomalies.
  • Yang ATK buffs for the team via Skill 3, Both Spell Cards 1 and 2’s Post-ATKs and through Boosting.

  • Gains 0.20 Spirit Power for any Freeze/Paralyze anomaly inflicted onto her. Various bullet lines across her kit inflict herself with a Paralyze layer.
  • Inflicts and breaks Paralyze anomalies with inflictions on all enemies via Skill 2 and Last Word Pre-ATK. Breaks are achieved by using All-Targeting Spell Card 1 (2P) and All-Targeting Last Word (3P).

Story Card Recommendations

Spell Card

When it comes to all the buffs surrounding W2 Kanako, she actually does a very good job at covering buffs that benefit her, which are also generously shared with her team, as well as keep herself very much afloat with her Spirit Power gain. However, it’s also still an option to double down on that strong support (Spirit Power, Yang ATK, CRIT ATK, Yang, DEF, Accuracy, etc) or just go all in when it comes to damage output on her Spell Cards, whether it’s Slash bullet boosting Cards for Spell Card 1, Energy bullet boosting Cards for Spell Card 2, and/or Wood elemental boosting ones for both/either!

Last Word

With a Last Word consisting of Light bullets, as well as 3 lines of Wood, the best pick here ends up being Kaguya’s Moonlit Festival! due to its boost in both Light and Wood by 45% each, really benefiting this Last Word here. As for other picks here, we can go to cards that boost Light bullets by 50% such as Hand in Hand With a Miracle, Makai God’s Descent, Evil Spirit Possession, Reisen’s Moonlit Festival! and Puppeteer and Necromancer. As for some other alternatives with respective 45% and 40% boosts to Light, but with strong Yang ATK stats, there is Silver Gale and Congress of Sages to work with.

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

Either Skill with a Spirit Power-based effect will help a lot when it comes to being leveled up, but if one had to be chosen over the other, it would go to Skill 3’s Lucky Tatara Bellows, increasing the team’s Spirit Power gain from 0.40 to 1.00 and also increasing their Yang ATK from 2 Stages to 4 Stages. Next up is Skill 1, which is Vernal Equinox Flow, taking W2 Kanako’s own Spirit Power gained from this from 0.50 to 1.50, ensuring she has exceeded that 3P threshold right away. And last up is Fertile Rice Fields, also a useful Skill increasing the team’s CRIT ATK by 4 Stages, granting them another Barrier and inflicting all enemies with 3 layers of Paralyze.

Character Strengths

Moriya’s Official Supportive God

W2 Kanako is a Support-Friend through and through, and she comes with a good chunk of helpful ways to benefit them, especially the Yang ones. From Yang ATK, to Yang DEF, to CRIT ATK, to Spirit Power, and to Accuracy, it can really prove useful! On top of that, they can also be long, fruitful buffs that can both last up to 4 turns and can grant up to 4 levels of it! An ally potentially lacking from at least 1 of the above will definitely appreciate the faithful benefits from this Tiny God!

Mountain of Spirit Power

On top of the above, W2 Kanako has access to additional Spirit Power benefits for herself on top of for the team. With Skill 1’s 1.50 Spirit Power and Skill 3’s 1.00 of it, she gets to 3.50P off the jump, with her selfish Skill 1 and supportive Skill 3, that access to 3P and beyond helps a lot, especially since Skill 1 has a 3 Turn Cooldown! However, alongside her aiding further with Spell Card 1’s Post-ATK, her Ability allows her to benefit from Freeze and Paralyze anomalies by gaining 0.20 Spirit Power for every layer of either getting inflicted, which W2 Kanako can do for herself with some of her own bullet lines.

Electrifying Number of Wood Breaks

W2 Kanako has an exceptionally large amount of Wood breaks to work with, commonly appearing in both Shots and both Spell Cards. With 5 lines of it on her Spread Shot, 4 lines in her Focus Shot, and 6 lines on lines on both Spell Cards 1 and 2. If any enemies are weak to Wood, or you have a certain Relic Ghost with Wood Weakness infliction, the breaks will be coming and damage will be effective!

Character Weaknesses

Tiny by Stature, and Tiny by Killing Power

One thing especially holding back W2 Kanako unfortunately is her Killers not quite being super strong in comparison to other Friends. Ones like Human, Beast, Beast Youkai and Fairy are decent and can land on some enemies in key stages, but it’s not as notable of a range as other ones out there. To add to that, her general damage on her Last Word, due to some factors such as lack of Hard Scaling appearing commonly and a lacking boost in elements effective/resisted against enemies, isn't quite as huge as other Ultra Festival Friends out there. But who knows if W2 Kanako will grow up to be a real powerhouse one day!
