Squall Line
Expand
Squall Line (a Touhou LW original) refers to a thunderstorm composed of multiple cells where new cells form as others dissipate along a single gust front. This is the temperament of this Yuugi, who supports the New Land of the Oni as a Nio oni.

Yuugi's original temperament of Metal Phase (strong against Earth Phase but weak to Fire Phase) and Star Essence (strong against Moon Essence but weak to Sun Essence) have combined with her guardian azure dragon's temperament (strong against Wood Phase).

Character Shots

The Spread Shot of Yuugi Hoshiguma from the world of iron and steam (a Touhou LW original). She sends her azure dragon forth to attack. This world's Yuugi has an azure dragon who battles alongside her. It's apparently a rather intelligent beast youkai. When the azure dragon of the Four Auspicious Beasts takes a human form, it's known as Moushou Shinkun (Meng Zhang in Chinese), but its relation to Yuugi's azure dragon is unclear.

The Focus Shot of Yuugi Hoshiguma from the world of iron and steam (a Touhou LW original). She swings her beloved metal club in this attack. Most oni wield metal clubs to smash and destroy. However, Yuugi and similarly powerful oni can cause much more damage with their fists. So, why does Yuugi wield a club? In part, it's because she prefers to give herself a handicap.

A Spell Card of Yuugi Hoshiguma from the world of iron and steam (a Touhou LW original). She manipulates anima to rule over a city. Yuugi can use her beast youkai's anima and her metal club together to release sound waves that assault her foe's spirit. However, this isn't the technique's true purpose. Yuugi designed this technique so she could use her metal club to directly control the New Land of the Oni. It is only possible thanks to a magic item called the Hoshiguma Dish embedded in her metal club.

The Last Word of Yuugi Hoshiguma from the world of iron and steam (a Touhou LW original). She rules over paradise with her knowledge from Hell. With her background as an oni and the way she uses her ability as a guard of Hell, she directly manages the New Land of the Oni, which was built as a single colossal contraption of steel. Unlike human civilizations, where lots of people rule with different levels of authority, the two Nio share all the authority between them. Their spiritual civilization's infrastructure is efficient and provides a high standard of living thanks to the Nio bearing this impossibly heavy responsibility on their massive shoulders.

Character Ability

Capable of wielding unexplainable phenomena (Berserk)
Expand
The ability of Yuugi Hoshiguma from the world of iron and steam (a Touhou LW original). Those who reside in the world where mountain resources are converted to power have formed their own unique civilization. Yuugi's ability doesn't appear to have changed much, but she seems to have used it extensively to establish the civilization she's a part of.

This world's Yuugi and Kasen work to support Suika as the two Nio oni. In our world, these three are all known as members of the Big Four of the Mountain, but things are a little different in this world. One difference being that the fourth member of the Big Four is nowhere to be found.

According to the historical records of most worlds, following the Battle of Mount Oe, the oni left their mountain and descended to Hell in resignation because humans no longer feared them. If these records are taken as fact, the migration of the oni could have played out in one of the following ways:

1. Suika Ibuki and the other Big Four, who previously ruled Gensokyo's Youkai Mountain, came to Gensokyo after they left Mount Oe. But then they once again got fed up with humans in Gensokyo and migrated to Hell, which would later become Former Hell.

2. Mount Oe was part of the group of mountains collectively known as the Youkai Mountain, situated within the original bounds of Gensokyo. This would mean that at the Battle of Mount Oe, Suika and the other oni were already the Big Four, and the battle is what caused them to grow weary of humans and migrate to Hell.

3. The oni took another path from Mount Oe to Hell.

The second theory may seem pretty out there at first glance, but when you consider how the Youkai Sage can manipulate boundaries, it's possible that the original Gensokyo, not enclosed within a barrier, was a patchwork of multiple locations spread across Japan. Also, while the Youkai Mountain appears as a single mountain within Gensokyo, it could be an amalgamation of many outside-world mountains described as being home to youkai in tales and legends. This is basically the opposite of the legend of the Yatsugatake Mountain Range, which is said to have originally been one massive mountain before Mount Fuji smashed it into pieces, giving it eight smaller peaks. There are many examples of foreign buildings or youkai entering Gensokyo with complete disregard for the distance it should take to get there. This might also help to explain why a modern-day city could be seen through a gap in the barrier that appeared at Hakurei Shrine, even though Gensokyo is supposed to be surrounded by mountains.

This world's Yuugi and her fellow oni didn't go to Gensokyo, or rather, they couldn't. Having grown weary of humans after the Battle of Mount Oe, they decided to try to build a New Land of the Oni. However, it is unclear where they lived before they came to Mount Oe and where they migrated after the battle. There were lots more oni in the past, so perhaps they all came together from different places and dispersed afterward. Perhaps some lived as Yaksha or Rakshasa in far-away India, whereas others served as guards in Hell as kishin. Some of them might even have spent some time in China, where oni are referred to as spirits of the dead or gate gods according to the philosophy of yin, yang, and the Five Phases. There might also be oni who were labeled as ''people who do not obey'' during the time when the imperial court spread its domain to the other islands of the Japanese archipelago. Creatures such as giants and dragons said to inhabit far-away Europe were also referred to as oni, not to mention the Europeans themselves, who the Japanese also labeled as oni due to their unfamiliar appearance. In ancient Japan, greater beings or beings that could not be seen were called ''onu,'' a term that later became conflated with oni. The term ''oni'' encompasses many non-human entities, and there have always been oni for as long as there have been humans.

Unexplainable Phenomena
The unexplainable nature of oni and other youkai is an integral part of what defines them as youkai. It's predicted that this world's Yuugi (i.e., Hoshiguma-Douji) uses her ability to ensure a peaceful life for the oni as Shuten-Douji's left hand.

Character Analysis

Kasen Ibaraki (Oni Gate Abou Rakshasa) was released on February 8th 2024 on Prayer “Azure Dragon Oni Ultra Festival”. For more up-to-date analysis, be sure to visit the Discord Official Discord Server.

In a world of iron and steam, there lie two members of the Big Four of the Mountain, or in this case, Nio-oni who work tirelessly to serve their own Shuten-Douji, better known to us as Suika Ibuki. One of these members, Yuugi Hoshiguma, or Hoshiguma-Douji of this realm serves as the Left Arm of Shuten-Douji, wields a metal club as her beloved weapon, and of course, has a great respect for those with great strength. With titles such as the Eastern Gate God and the Open-Mouth Oni, how will this Nio-oni use her unexplainable phenomena to deal with this unexplainable Lost Word incident?

W5 Yuugi Hoshiguma is a Technical-Class Friend who can lock horns with her enemies thanks to her helpful mix of support and debuffs, while continuously providing herself a Barrier for 3 turns.

As an Attacker / Supporter / Debuffer

  • Yin ATK stat at 1875.
  • Provides a 45% boost in bullets with elements effective against said target.
  • Spirit Power boost in the form of Skill 2 (1.80).
  • Yin ATK buffs for the team via both Skill 2 and Grazing.
  • Yin DEF debuffs against enemies via All Spell Cards (Spell Card 1 and Last Word Pre-ATKs, Spell Card 2 Post-ATK) as well as very few bullet lines across both Spread and Focus Shots.
  • CRIT ATK buffs provided for the team via Skill 3 and Spell Card 2 Pre-ATK.
  • CRIT DEF debuffs on enemies via Skill 1 and Last Word Pre-ATK, as well as few bullet lines across both Shots.
  • Agility buffs for the team via Last Word Pre-ATK as well as selfish Agility buffs on some bullet lines in her Spell Cards.
  • The above Agility buffs can also go towards W5 Yuugi’s Slice Scaling, going up to 100% on her Last Word.
  • Small Accuracy buff on the first Bullet Line of Spell Card 2.
  • Evasion debuffs on enemies via Skill 1 and Spell Card 2’s Pre-ATK.
  • W5 Yuugi’s Killers include Youkai, Divine Spirit, Soul, Poltergeist, Phantom, Vengeful Spirit, Former Capital, Yaoyorozu no Kami, Tsukumogami, Tengu, Kappa and Oni.

As a Utility / Breaker

  • Juggles around 4 elements, but the most common one here is Wood, appearing regularly on her Spell Cards and Last Word, Star appears once on every attack (except for Spell Card 1, appearing two times), Earth is a similar story to Star, but not appearing on Shots and Metal only appears in her Shots.
  • Gains offensive buffs being a stage of Yin ATK, Yang ATK, CRIT ATK and CRIT Accuracy when inflicted with a layer of Burn or Blind. W5 Yuugi inflicts Burn anomalies onto herself with Skill 3 and bullet lines across her Spread Shot, Focus Shot, Spell Card 1 and Last Word.
  • Can also inflict and break Burn and Blind anomalies of her enemies too. Burn anomaly inflictions include Skill 1, Spell Card 1’s Pre-ATK, both on all enemies and an anomaly on a random enemy via Passive 2 every turn. Burn/Blind breaks are achieved via All-Targeting Focus Shot (2P), All-Targeting Spell Card 1 (3P) and All-Targeting Last Word (3P).
  • W5 Yuugi has an interesting Barrier-Themed effect in her Skill 3, giving herself +1 Barrier every turn for 3 turns. On top of that, Spell Card 2’s Post-ATK gives the whole team +2 Barriers.
  • Takes 20% less damage from Sun and Fire elemental bullets.
  • Heals the team’s HP by 50% via Spell Card 1 Post-ATK.

Story Card Recommendations

(Card recommendations last updated on February 08, 2024)

Spell Card

Since W5 Yuugi doesn’t gain the most Spirit Power of all, only appearing in her Skill 2, it will help to give her more of that to help her out more. Other options for Story Cards include maybe doubling down on CRIT ATK, Yin ATK and/or Agility, even for the team if you want. If you are just worried about Spell Card damage at this point though, you can look to cards that boost Wood elemental bullets for either, or for bullet types, you have cards that can boost Body Bullets for Spell Card 1 and Light bullets for Spell Card 2.

Last Word

With a Body Last Word, having a 50% option will do the trick for W5 Yuugi, whether it be Incident Shrine, Choose an Animal Spirit, Stand-In Shrine Maiden or Beach Sanshoku Geidontei. Thanks to there being 4 Wood lines to work with, other out there options may include Undercover Reporter (30% Wood, 25% Body), Eating Contest (45% Body), Boundary of Time (50% Wood), Little Sister and Sweets (50% Wood), Gaze Upon the Flowers (50% Wood), Blue Goodbyes (45% Wood, CRIT DEF debuff) and Infinity Garden (40% Wood, Yin DEF debuff)

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

With Evasion debuffs replacing Accuracy buffs, it may be beneficial to begin with Skill 1’s East Gate God, in addition to both CRIT DEF debuffs and Burn anomaly inflictions on enemies. Next up (and could swap orders with the prior skill) will be Skill 2’s Shuten’s Left Arm. What makes this important is it being the only source of Spirit Power for herself, which on top of a little Yin ATK buff for the team, will help. And finally, we have Skill 3’s Open-Mouth Nio, boosting her team’s CRIT ATK and inflicting more Burn anomalies onto herself.

Character Strengths

Helpful Mix of Support and Debuffing

W5 Yuugi is very capable of providing multiple means for not just herself, but allies to benefit from. Whether it’s the Yin ATK and CRIT ATK buffs for the team, or the Yin DEF, CRIT DEF and Evasion debuffs on all enemies, all of these means achieved by her Skills or Spell Card Pre/Post-ATKs can be rather handy for other allies, especially Yin ones.

Unlimited Barrier Works

What W5 Yuugi is able to do to make her stand out is her Skill 3’s Barrier increase for herself. However, this doesn’t just last for 1 turn which means that instead, W5 Yuugi will gain 1 Barrier every turn for 3 turns. In addition, W5 Yuugi can also provide the team 2 Barriers with Spell Card 2’s Post-ATK, making her a rather useful Barrier provider, both for herself and for allies.

Nio-Oni Sign “Anomalies, Strength, Disorder and Spirits”

The anomalies that W5 Yuugi can work with include Burn/Blind ones inflicted both on herself and on enemies. As for the ones on herself, the offensive buffs are a source of her strength as they can buff her Yin ATK and CRIT ATK even further, which on top of W5 Yuugi’s mastery of Barriers, she can keep these up by inflicting Burn anomalies via a Skill and various bullet lines. As for her enemies, she can inflict Burn anomalies onto enemies, for them to be broken. While we are about to get into some disorder-like territory when it comes to this Nio-oni below, with enough Spirit Power, she can do a lot of Burn breaking as well.

Character Weaknesses

Heavy Reliance on Effective Elemental Damage

Ironically, the Nio-oni that is notorious for her great physical strength has some issues when it comes to both her elemental distribution and her weak damage output. With her Ability allowing her effective elemental bullets to get a 45% boost, which is a great amount, unfortunately, her main element being Wood finds itself clashing with other elements being Earth, Star and Metal, and if her target or targets don’t have a weakness to Wood, W5 Yuugi’s damage will really fall flat, although a strong Killer range mitigates it a bit. Maybe a certain Relic with Wood Weakness infliction can ensure her damage stays strong…
