Overview

Pheromosa and Buzzwole are seen as parellels due to their identical typing and Ultra Beast status, but Buzzwole is far harder to raid against. With higher defense and a plethora of 3-bar moves, it can actually be a bit of a pain to deal with even with a full team of Flying Types. And speaking of Flying Types; they're the play here as well, as they can drop Buzzwole pretty quickly.

Note that it's possible to solo Buzzwole, even outside of Windy weather, but only Rayquaza and its Mega Evolution can pull it off.

Approach

Team composition

  • Prioritize Flying Types, that double-weakness combined with the power of the top Flying Types can make this a much easier raid than it otherwise would be.

Dodging strategy

  • Dodging can be a pain due to how many 3-bar moves Buzzwole has, so it's largely optional. The main time that you should dodge is if you're close to your next Charged Move.

Best Raid Boss Counters

Supreme Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Rayquaza Mega Rayquaza
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

When a Flying Type weakness shows up, you can bet that this absolute monster will top the list. And this time we've got a 2x Flying weakness? Yeah, nothing in the game can possibly keep up with Mega Rayquaza. This monster breaks well into solo-worthy DPS, and has TDO that dwarfs the rest of our current roster.

Good Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Pidgeot Mega Pidgeot
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While it can't compare with Mega Rayquaza, Mega Pidgeot genuinely can cause a lot of damage.

Mega Blaziken Mega Blaziken
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Yup, even Mega Blaziken can show up and prove its viability with a non-STAB Brave Bird alone.

Mega Charizard Y Mega Charizard Y
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Same basic story as Mega Blaziken.

Supreme Counters

Rayquaza Rayquaza
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Even without its Mega Evolution, Rayquaza has tremendous power and can cause hefty damage. It's the only non-Mega Pokemon currently in the game that has solo-level DPS against Buzzwole at lv.40 outside of boosts.

Good Counters

ShadowMoltres Shadow Moltres
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

One of the long-time monarchs of the sky, Shadow Moltres still has outstanding presence when its Flying Type moveset is called for, and this is definitely an example. It's not on a par with Rayquaza, but it's still outstanding.

Shadow-Staraptor Shadow Staraptor
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating
Gust Fly Best

While a bit on the glassy side, Shadow Staraptor has a lot of sheer DPS. It hits extremely hard, making it a good option for getting ahead of the clock.

Shadow-Honchkrow Shadow Honchkrow
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

In this raid, Shadow Honchkrow is pretty much just a worse Shadow Staraptor. It's still good if only due to its high DPS, but it is behind the competition on all fronts with the added disadvantage of not resisting Buzzwole's Bug Type moves.

Shadow-Ho-oh Shadow Ho-Oh
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Ho-oh has one of the best mixes of DPS and TDO for this raid, especially if you're lucky enough to have Hidden Power Flying. Its performance is definitely weighed more towards TDO, but it's still extremely duo-viable.

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

A solid, middle-of-the-road option for this raid, Yveltal can be great help when building a team. If you've got Oblivion Wing, then it can definitely put in the numbers, though it's not quite as good on the TDO side as it rightfully should be due to not resisting Bug or Fighting.

shadow_unfezant Shadow Unfezant
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While it's a bit of a vanilla Flying Type, don't be fooled; this is a great Flying Type attacker. Shadow Unfezant hits surprisingly hard despite its "shadow regional Pidgey evolution" status. There are definitely worse picks here.

Staraptor Staraptor
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating
Gust Fly Best

Another "regional Pidgey evolution, Staraptor is legitimately good if only due to Fly. While a bit glassy, it's still a very solid pick.

ShadowZapdos Shadow Zapdos
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Zapdos lacks a Flying Type Fast Move, but it can still cause quite a bit of damage thanks to its raw power.

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The old-fashioned king of Flying Types has lost its throne, but it's still great!

Honchkrow Honchkrow
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Glassy due to its lack of relevant resistances, but still fine.

Shadow-Lugia Shadow Lugia
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The true Flying tank, nothing has as much TDO as Shadow Lugia.... except for Mega Rayquaza.

Shadow Mewtwo Shadow Mewtwo
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

It's hard to get away from Shadow Mewtwo in terms of raid guides. This thing doesn't have the best TDO, and is only 1x Super Effective against Buzzwole, but it's still a worthwhile attacker.

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While not as strong as its Shadow counterpart, basic Ho-oh is still a solid pick.
