Fate T. Harlaown

An endlessly kind girl with a sorrowful past, and an unyielding determination to never let anyone suffer like she herself once did.

She is shy around strangers when outside battle, and gets easily embarrassed about praise or compliments outside of battle, however...anyone who seeks to hurt her friends or family will quickly find themselves faced with an iron will to prevent anyone from hurting someone close to her again.

Originally appearing as Nanoha’s rival in the Jewel Seed incident, she worked for her mother, the mage Precia Testarossa, helping her fulfill her plans in a desperate attempt to earn her mother’s affection and attention, well past the point it was good for her to try to do so. But the truth was, this was something that would forever be denied to her.

As she later learned, she is not in fact Precia’s biological daughter, but rather a clone of her real daughter, Alicia, created in her likeness and implanted with Alicia’s memories in an attempt to resurrect Alicia, after she passed away in an accident.

However, Fate was born different in every way from her older sister or original, having a different dominant hand, vastly different magical potential, as well as different mannerisms, causing her mother to become ever more obsessed at resurrecting the true Alicia, and resentful of Fate for failing to live up to her expectations.

Upon revealing all of this to her, Precia proceeded to truly abandon Fate to her fate, and, Fate having been defeated by Nanoha and captured by the TSAB, proceeded to perform one final desperate attempt at reaching the legendary land of Al-Hazard, in order to search for a way to resurrect Alicia, which surely exists in that place, or so she believed.

This final attempt left Precia forever floating between dimensions, taking Alicia’s preserved body with her. No one knows if she ever reached her destination, or if her destination indeed was ever even within reach. In her final moments, Precia realized the mistake she had all along made: instead of treating Fate as a failed Alicia, she should have realized to treat Fate as the little sister Alicia had always wanted.

This incident, however, is also how Fate met Nanoha, her lifelong friend and partner, who she has never remained far from for long afterwards. The incident also allowed her to meet Lindy Harlaown, a high-ranking TSAB officer and space-ship captain who adopted her and welcomed her in the Harlaown family, and has ever since been far more of a mother to Fate than Precia ever truly was. This adoption also brought into her life her older adoptive brother Chrono, Lindy’s biological son, who was also one of those involved in the Jewel Seed incident.

Following in Nanoha’s footsteps, Fate also began work for  the TSAB some time after this incident when she became able to, both due to her extraordinary abilities, and as a way to atone for the things she had almost done as a result of her involvement in the Jewel Seed incident.

Fate uses a Midchildan magic style and prefers close and mid-range magic, as well as using her Intelligent Device Bardiche as a melee weapon, using her speed to skirt around her foes and rain down fast attacks on them. However, she is lately also capable of long-range bombardment attacks, though these lock her in place and unable to use her speed to her advantage, so she uses extreme care on when to use them.

However, Fate never learned this magic from her mother Precia. Instead, she was taught all she knows by Precia’s cat familiar Rynith, up until her training was complete, at which point Rynith vanished, as her master Precia commanded. Continuing upon this training, however, Fate has continued to grow her magical arsenal by her own hands after her defeat by Nanoha.

Trivia:

Fate also has a wolf familiar named Alph, who was her only true companion and protector in the many years before  the Jewel Seed incident, and also during it, up until she managed to become friends with Nanoha.

It is perhaps due to her mother considering her a failure of a resurrection that Fate never received a proper name, and was only ever named after the resurrection project that is her origin, Project Fate.
