Wizards Unite Profession Guide: Which Profession is Best for You

Overview

Professions in Wizards Unite adds a unique RPG element to the game, making it distinct from Ingress and Pokémon GO. It offers the player the ability to pick and choose their role in the combat aspect of the game.

There are currently three professions in the game to choose from, the Auror, Magizoologist and the Professor. Each profession has their own unique traits, talents and abilities. They also each play a different role in combat, and additionally, have both positive and negative match-ups against enemies.

Profession Roles TL;DR:

  • Auror - Damage Dealer
  • Magizoologist - Healing Support / Defensive Tank
  • Professor - Hybrid Support / Damage Dealer

Don’t feel upset if you choose a profession and don’t end up liking the play style, you can change it whenever you want outside of combat!

Important Note: Even though your profession can be changed at any time, the scrolls and spellbooks used for a profession's skill trees cannot be refunded currently! You only receive stat / passive bonuses from the skill tree of your current profession. If you switch to a new profession, you will have to build up the skill tree for stat bonuses from the new profession.

Quick Tips

Each Profession has its own skill tree, known as lessons in-game. This means they have their own unique spells and stats. If you play in a group, it is ideal to have different people focus on different professions to maximize effectiveness.

Also, all the professions can solo the Wizarding Challenges, so don't be worried about choosing the "wrong" class. Eventually all of them end up strong enough to solo fortresses on their own.

Auror

Aurors are the DPS class in Wizards Unite. which means you'll be the main damage dealer for your team. You don't have as much health, or supportive spells but you do pack a punch! Aurors are effective against Dark Force types of enemies.

Fun facts:

In the Wizarding World universe, Aurors are highly skilled officers part of the Ministry of Magic, working in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. You guessed it! They're kind of like the magic police. They're exceptionally in combat, and are trained to defend against the dark arts, tasked with capturing dark witches and wizards.

The following characters from the Wizarding World universe are examples of Aurors:

  • Harry Potter
  • Ronald Weasley
  • Theseus Scamander
  • Theodard Fontaine
  • Charity Wilkinson

Magizoologist

Magizoologists are the tank/support class in Wizards Unite. This means whilst you might not be dealing the most damage in combat, you're equipped with the best spells to support teammates. You also have more than enough health to be on the frontlines, and take any damage. You're effective against beast type enemies.

Fun facts:

In the Wizarding World, Magizoologists are wizards or witches who study magical creatures. There are even a number of specialized professions within the field such as Dragonology! Charlie Weasley from the Harry Potter series serves as a great example of someone who specialized in studying Dragons.

The following characters from the Wizarding World universe are examples of Magizoologists:

  • Luna Lovegood
  • Rubeus Hagrid
  • Newt Scamander
  • Rolf Scamander

Professor

In Wizards Unite, Professors are sort of like a hybrid between the Magizoologist and Auror classes. They have more health than the Auror class, which allows them to stay in combat longer, but they don't deal as much damage. Similarly to the Magizoologist class, they also have a wide array of support spells in their arsenal. This makes Professors perfect in any team, as they're able to swap between a support role, to a front-line DPS at any time.

Fun facts

In the Wizarding World (and similarly to ours), Professor is the title given to members of the wizarding community who devote their time to education and research. We see these people most notably in the Harry Potter series, at educational institutions like Hogwarts.

The following characters from the Wizarding World universe are examples of Professors:

  • Albus Dumbledore
  • Minerva McGonagall
  • Remus Lupin

The Four Founders of Hogwarts were also Professors:

  • Godric Gryffindor
  • Salazar Slytherin
  • Rowena Ravenclaw
  • Helga Hufflepuff

Skill Trees

Each Profession has a skill tree, known as a 'lesson' in-game. At the time of writing, there is currently one lesson available for each profession, but Niantic has plans to introduce more in the future. Similar to other RPG titles, every skill tree has different nodes and tiers of unlockable abilities as you go down the tree.

The different abilities on the skill trees can also be upgraded more than once, and they usually cost a combination of spell books, scrolls or restricted books to upgrade.

On the lesson skill trees there are passive abilities, which are always active during combat, which provides stat boosts and different benefits against certain types of foes or situations.

You can also unlock active abilities, usually spells which you can cast before a battle in a Wizarding Challenge. Usually these are like a curses which you can put on an enemy, which will debuff them, or a support spell to help teammates. These all cost "focus" to cast.

Stat Details

Each Profession's page has a customizable skill tree and stat calculator, but Wizards Unite doesn't really go into detail about what each stat does in the game. Here are those details:

  • Accuracy: The amount of increased accuracy a combatant has against evasive Foes.

  • Critical Power: The amount of additional damage done when landing a successful Critical Cast.

  • Defence: Defensive strength against Foes.

  • Defence Breach: The decrease a combatant does to their Foe's defence in combat.

  • Deficiency Defence: The increase in Defence when the combatant has a deficiency against that Foe.

  • Power: The amount of damage a combatant can inflict against Foes.

  • Precision: The chance a successful Spell Cast will result in a Critical Cast.

  • Proficiency Power: The increase in the damage done against Foes when the combatant has a Proficiency against that Foe.

  • Protego Power: The reduction in the damage taken by a combatant when Protego is successfully cast.
  • Focus: This is used to cast Hexes on Foes and Charms on yourself and Allies before and between Enemy Encounters in Wizarding Challenges.

For a comparison of the total Player Stats possible when maxing each individual profession, check out the below guide:

Proficiency and Deficiency
pd

Each Profession has a different set of proficiencies and deficiencies--or strengths and weaknesses.

Proficiency and Deficiency determines how effective or ineffective you and your Foe will be against each other.

  • Aurors are Proficient against Dark Forces Foes but Deficient against Beast Foes
  • Magizoologists are Proficient against Beast Foes but Deficient against Curiosity Foes
  • Professors are Proficient against Curiosity Foes but Deficient against Dark Forces Foes

Things to Keep in Mind

Although you can change professions at any time, there is no way to get back the books and scrolls you spend in a certain skill tree yet. So before you decide to change professions, remember you will need to regrind back all the scrolls and books.

The only way to get restricted books in the game right now is through event quests, so when one happens make sure to try to stock up as much as you can and complete all the missions.

Although the Auror is meant to be the damage dealing class, at the time of writing, due to balancing issues, the Professor is actually stronger.

You can always check your stat sheet to see how you're progressing, and if you're confused about which class is good against what type of enemy, you can always check on the Profession tab.

If you're ever confused, you can always check the information button on the Professions tab, which is a little circle button with an "i" in the middle.
