Builds

Leader of Lefundos

Though he is a Knight and he can be an excellent tank, Tywin's real strength lies in supporting his team to victory. Especially in PvP, his value is in his 100% Defense Break and his powerful DPS buffs.

Gear

It's vitally important that Tywin act before his enemies, but it's also crucial that he acts before his team's DPS so he can maximize their damage. As such, Speed is the most important stat for Tywin. After Speed, Effectiveness is second priority so his Defense Break can be as reliable as possible.

For PvP, Tywin's other stats rarely matter that much after he's used his S3 > S2 combo. His best general-purpose stat is HP, both for survivability and a little extra damage on his attacks. From there, you can build Defense (even more survivability) or Effect Resistance (especially if you don't give him an Immunity set).

A Speed set is unquestionably Tywin's best primary gear set. His secondary gear set can be either an Immunity set or a Hit set.

Artifacts

Cursed Compass is Tywin's best Artifact for PvP, since it maximizes the accuracy of his initial AOE Defense Break. If your Tywin isn't very fast and/or your team lacks a CR-pusher who can help Tywin get the first turn, you could also consider Hilag Lance to help him "cut in" if the enemy team outspeeds you.

Team

Core

This is an example of a team you do not want to face in Arena PvP. Make sure Basar is equipped with a max-level Tagehel's Ancient Book so Tywin has Souls to burn at the start of the fight.

The order here is simple:

  • Shadow Rose or Basar can go first. Both CR-delay the enemy team, plus an extra advantage: Basar strips their buffs, and Shadow Rose CR-pushes your team.
  • Tywin acts next. He uses his S3 to Defense Break the enemy and Soulburns it so he can go again and buff Blood Blade Karin.
  • Blood Blade Karin MUST act after Tywin, and preferably after the two CR-pushers as well. With Tywin's buffs and debuffs in place, her S3 will genocide the enemy team.
Secondary

This is a budget version of the above strategy.

  • Tywin Soulburns his S3 and then buffs Mercedes with his S2 so she can cleave. This team has two Mages (Mercedes and Adlay) so players who do not have a max-level Tagehel's can equip two (one on each Mage) instead, still allowing Tywin to Soulburn.
  • Righteous Thief Roozid is here to CR-push. He also gives the team a Speed buff, which is helpful. He can be replaced with any other CR-pusher you may have (i.e., Judith or Rose).
  • Mercedes is an underestimated cleaver that all players have access to. She can equip a Tagehel's if needed, but otherwise wants a DPS Artifact like Kal'adra or Exorcist's Tonfa. She can be replaced if you have better cleavers (i.e., Vildred or Celestial Mercedes), but remember that you need enough Souls for Tywin to Soulburn.
  • Adlay is a Tagehel's holder and also a little bit of a safety net for this team. His S3 increases enemy cooldowns, potentially slowing their offense enough for Mercedes to get a second cleave off. He can be replaced by any other Mage you prefer; good options might be Researcher Carrot, Carmainerose, or Mistychain.

Shield of Lefundos

Combining Ice element, tanky stats, a Defense buff, reliable Defense Break, and a strong DPS buff, it's no surprise that Tywin is an excellent tank for Wyvern 11. This build can easily be used to tank in other PvE content as well, but Wyvern 11 is where Tywin performs the best, so we'll use it as an example.

Gear

Tywin's preferred substats for PvE tanking are very clear. He wants Speed so he can apply his Defense buff as often as possible, and Effectiveness to make his buff dispel and Defense Break as accurate as possible. Then he wants to build pure tank. Stack HP% and Def% on every free slot in his gear.

Preferably, Tywin's gear sets will be a Speed set and a Health set. However, if your Tywin isn't quite sturdy enough to tank Wyvern 11's fireballs consistently yet, you can go for two Health sets and a Defense set instead.

Artifacts

Artifact choice is the main place a PvE Tywin build is going to be different for Wyvern as opposed to other PvE content. In most PvE content, Tywin probably wants to run Aurius (first choice) or Adamant Shield (backup choice) to help protect his entire party.

These are bad Artifacts in Wyvern 11, however, because Wyvern 11 always attacks the first person in your party (who should be Tywin in this case). Tywin just needs to protect himself, not the rest of the party. As such, his best options are going to be either the Sword of Ezera or Noble Oath.

Team

Core

This is a textbook team for Wyvern 11. Tywin tanks, Angelica heals, and Alexa and Karin burn the Wyvern down with Karin's DPS and Alexa's poisons.

Make sure you use Tywin's S2 on Karin in this team comp, not Alexa. Alexa's Poison debuffs deals damage independent of her stats, while Karin needs all the Attack and Crit Chance she can get.

Analysis

Overview

Tywin is a premier single-target tank optimized for taking the brunt of boss damage. He serves a dual purpose as a debuffer/ buffer, yet his speed and personal CR boost allow him to keep up with the best damage dealers. This additionally allows him to serve an additional role in Arena cleave teams as a leading AoE breaker.

Strengths

Tanky Yet Speedy

Tywin is tied for sixth-highest HP in Epic Seven, and his DEF is no slouch either. He also ties with Cecilia and Lilias for the second-highest Speed stat in the game among Knights.

Reliable AOE Defense Break

With some investment, Tywin is one of only two heroes who can get a 100% infliction rate on an AOE Defense Break skill: his S3, All-Out Attack. (The other is Bellona.) This comes on a 5-turn CD (reduced to 4 turns with the same investment). He even gets his own 3-turn DEF buff from the same skill - a strong bonus.

Crazy Support for Solo DPS

Tywin's S2 grants both himself and one lucky ally an Attack buff, a Crit Chance buff, and a massive chunk of CR. Crit Chance buffs are quite rare, in part because they are so good. Having a Crit Chance buff means your DPS heroes don't have to focus on Crit Chance in their gear, allowing them to focus on other substats. Giving this buff alongside an Attack buff and a CR-push is every DPS's favorite birthday present.

S3 > S2 Combo Potential

The thing that pushes Tywin from "great" to "indispensable" is the fact that his S3 can be Soulburned to give him an extra turn. This means that Tywin doesn't have to choose between Defense Breaking the enemy and buffing his team's cleave DPS; he can accomplish both as long as he has 20 Souls to burn.

Weaknesses

Limited Buff Dispel

Tywin unfortunately does not sport a full dispel on Sword Storm, and it is unreliable. A 75% chance to remove just a single buff is not enough benefit for the +5 Skill Enhancement that it requires, especially in PvP.

No Provoke

As with any other tank who does not have Provoke, Tywin cannot force enemies to attack him, which often leaves his squishier teammates in the lurch. A Provoke isn't just about redirecting attacks: it is also a soft disable, preventing the Provoked target from using anything except its basic attack. Lacking this kind of battlefield control is a definite drawback for Tywin.

Buff Targeting is Limited

While Tywin's S2 buffs are strong, each use only affects Tywin himself and one other ally. This is fine in a party with only one DPS hero, but it's less than satisfactory if you have two or three heroes who want the buff. The fact that the buff always affects Tywin is also something of a waste: Tywin's damage output is poor, even with his buffs active.
