Overview

  • This battle features Mephistopheles with a horde of enemies that he will hide behind, all the while providing an array of double-edged "contracts" to your Servants that initially are buffs, but will become sometimes devastating debuffs after they expire.
  • Soloing this encounter is also technically possible, for those who don't mind a drawn out battle (see video section).
  • Mephistopheles starts by applying an array of buffs and debuffs:
    • Party is inflicted with Nullify Buff at round start, which lasts until it is consumed 3 times. This can be cleansed with debuff clear effects!
    • He applies a Contract to all Servants including the backline, which will increase NP Gain by 60% for 6 turns, but upon expiry (the 7th turn), importantly will inflict Instant Death and decreases Max HP by 10,000. The Instant Death effect can be resisted by Instant Death Immunity passives or buffs.
    • He randomly applies an additional Buster buff Contract to one frontline Servant, which will boost their Buster performance for 2 turns, and after removal, decreases their ATK by 90% for 3 turns.
  • Mephistopheles will escape to the end of the enemy lineup after finishing his starting actions with an Order Change effect.
  • Mephistopheles only reappears upon satisfying certain conditions:
    • 1) When an active Contract expires
    • 2) When a Contracted Servant dies
    • 3) When enough enemies are defeated (<3 enemies remaining)
  • When Reappearing, All Enemies except Mephistopheles gain Taunt, making it sometimes impossible to target Mephistopheles while other enemies are on the field without the help of an AoE NP.
  • While on field, Mephistopheles randomly grants one of six Contracts, targeting a random frontline Servant (see table above for details on their effects). After Mephistopheles is satisfied and has granted Servants contracts, he will then retreat once more to the back of the lineup.
  • Upon Break, Mephistopheles clears his own debuffs, and removes all frontline Servants' Buffs and Expired Contract debuffs, although currently active contracts will not be touched. He will also drain 100% NP Gauge from all enemies and grant himself a 50% DEF buff. Avoid applying debuffs on the same turn that you expect to break his HP bar, since he will promptly remove them.

Team Recommendations

  • AoE DPS is recommended due to the taunt mechanic for this fight. Bringing a Servant that has class advantage, such as Rider, Alter Ego, or Berserker are all effective options.
  • ST DPS with trait advantage can also be an option, with Queen Medb having both class advantage and trait damage bonus, although they will need to be backed with allies that are able to clear out the other enemies on the field so that they can properly target Mephistopheles.
  • Event Damage CE, Jewel Bride is highly recommended on the primary DPS. It not only provides a 200% damage boost if max limit broken, but the Guts effect can be invaluable for surviving the Instant Death effect inflicted by the 6-turn contract.
  • Debuff Clear Support will help immensely to remove the 3-time Nullify Buff effect inflicted at battle start. Asclepius, Saint Martha, and Caster of Okeanos are all excellent options with full party debuff clear on a skill.
  • Death Immune Support such as Skadi's NP can fully resist the Instant Death effect that will occur due to the contract expiry at the end of Turn 7, so having her NP up during by the time that turn arrives can help the party survive the contract gimmick! Do be wary that the 10,000 Max HP decrease will still occur, however, leaving Servants with less than that amount at 1 HP, so without further protection Servants can still fall very quickly. Using Skadi's NP on Turn 7 exactly will at least provide a 1-hit Evade for the party.
  • Damage Support for the DPS is always helpful, to increase the amount of burst damage available while Mephistopheles is briefly on the field.
  • Taunt Support is useful to protect the DPS, particularly if a Berserker is used, and can also help serve as an additional "Order Change" to bring in backline support Servants once they fall on the field.
  • Soloing: Some Servants technically can solo this encounter, such as Qin Shi Huang or Jeanne d'Arc, although these tend to involve lengthy battles where every one of the enemies must be defeated before reaching Mephistopheles at the end. A key aspect to keep in mind if attempting the solo is that on Turn 7, it is important to use the Servant's Invincibility-providing skill or NP, since the expiry of the contract on that turn will inflict Instant Death. They will survive via the Guts provided by the Event Damage CE, and the Invincibility is necessary so that they do not fall to subsequent attacks from enemies on that turn.
